76ers’ Embiid has orbital bone surgery

Philadelphia 76ers All-Star center Joel Embiid had surgery Saturday to repair a fractured orbital bone around his left eye. The club said there is no timetable for his return. Embiid is scheduled to be examined again late next week. Embiid was hurt Wednesday against the Knicks when he was accidently head-butted in a collision with teammate Markelle Fultz. Embiid also is in the NBA’s concussion program . . . Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard is in New York for a second time this year to continue rehabilitation on his right quadriceps injury under the supervision of medical personnel outside the organization, ESPN reported. League sources said Spurs staff have traveled to New York to meet with Leonard and stay abreast of his treatment . . . Lakers swingman Brandon Ingram is in the NBA’s concussion protocol after showing signs of an apparent concussion after being injured Friday against the Bucks.

Baylor paid Briles after firing

Baylor paid former football coach Art Briles more than $15 million after firing him in 2016 in the wake of a sexual assault scandal that included allegations against former players, according to newly released tax documents obtained by the Dallas Morning News and Waco Tribune-Herald. Briles, 61, was fired after an investigation by a law firm found that over several years the school mishandled numerous sexual assault allegations, including some against football players. Baylor also gave former university president Ken Starr more than $4.5 million after he resigned that same year. Ex-Baylor athletic director Ian McCaw, who now has the same job at Liberty, received $761,059 upon his resignation . . . Xavier hired assistant Travis Steele as its men’s basketball coach, four days after Chris Mack left for Louisville.

Joshua outduels Parker

British fighter Anthony Joshua was taken the distance for the first time in his career before beating previously undefeated New Zealander Joseph Parker by unanimous decision and becoming a three-belt world heavyweight boxing champion in Cardiff, Wales. Two judges scored the bout 118-110, while the third had it 119-109. Joshua added Parker’s WBO belt to his WBA and IBF titles, and moved within one belt of becoming the first undisputed champion since Lennox Lewis in 2000. American Deontay Wilder holds the WBC’s heavyweight belt and could meet Joshua later this year. The fight was only the second heavyweight unification title bout between unbeaten fighters, after Mike Tyson against Tony Tucker in 1987.

Ibrahimovic stars in debut

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Sweden’s career leader in goals, scored twice in his Major League Soccer debut as the Los Angeles Galaxy beat Los Angeles FC, 4-3, in Carson, Calif. Ibrahimovic, who left Manchester United to join MLS, won it with a header in the opening seconds of stoppage time after tying it at 3 in the 77th minute . . . Lionel Messi came off the bench to score the tying goal in the 89th minute as Barcelona kept its 30-match Spanish League unbeaten streak alive with a 2-2 draw at Sevilla.

Stephens wins in Miami

Sloane Stephens won her hometown tennis tournament, beating Jelena Ostapenko, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, at the Miami Open in Key Biscayne, Fla. The 13th-seeded Stephens repeatedly extended rallies until sixth seed Ostapenko made a mistake. Ostapenko had a 25-6 advantage in winners but committed 48 unforced errors to 21 by Stephens . . . The Colorado Avalanche were dealt a huge blow to their playoff hopes with goaltender Semyon Varlamov (lower-body) and defenseman Erik Johnson (fractured patella) being ruled out for the rest of the regular season . . . Sabres defenseman Victor Antipin was taken off the ice on a stretcher after Predators forward Scott Hartnell checked him into the glass from behind in the second period. Buffalo coach Phil Housley said the rookie is doing well but the team will know more about his prognosis Sunday . . . Texas Rangers center fielder Delino DeShields broke the hamate bone in his left hand while taking a swing Friday against the Astros and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks . . . The St. Louis Cardinals completed a one-year, $14 million deal with free agent closer Greg Holland, who will report to Single A Palm Beach . . . Jockey Christophe Soumillon and Thunder Snow stormed past favorite West Coast by more than five lengths in the 2,000-meter, $10 million Dubai World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Hawkbill won the Dubai Sheema Classic, a Group 1 race over 2,410 meters on turf with a purse of $6 million . . . John Velazquez rode Audible nine furlongs in 1 minute, 49.48 seconds to win the Grade 1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, cementing his status as a serious Kentucky Derby contender.
