FOXBOROUGH — Griff Whalen knows it’s coming. In fact, he’s a little surprised it hasn’t happened already.

The newest Patriot left quite an impression on some of his new teammates last season when he was part of a botched fake punt by the Colts on a fourth-and-3 play.

It was designed to catch the Patriots off guard but it caught a lot of his Colts teammates off guard when Whalen snapped the ball to Colt Anderson, who was immediately tackled by Brandon Bolden, Nate Ebner, and Logan Ryan.

The play became infamous for its futility and made all the highlight shows for all the wrong reasons.

So naturally, Whalen was expecting some locker room grief when he arrived in town and eventually signed a one-year deal.

But so far, mum’s been the word.

When asked if he was expecting it, Whalen smiled and said, “Kinda was, but we’ll see.’’

The receiver/returner said he didn’t realize how big the play had become until after the season.

“I wasn’t really paying too much attention,’’ he said. “During the season guys are pretty locked in inside the building. I heard more about it sort of later on.’’

Whalen projects to be a fourth receiver and return man. He could help fill the void left by Danny Amendola, who is expected to be on the shelf until the playoffs with a high ankle sprain.

After being released by the Chargers a few weeks back, Whalen had one other workout before getting the call from the Patriots.

“I was excited,’’ said Whalen, an undrafted free agent from Stanford, where he played with current Patriots Cam Fleming, Jordan Richards, and Tyler Gaffney. “Come into a good team that I’ve gone against a few times. Excited for another opportunity to come and hopefully help out the team anyway I can.’’

Through a pair of practices, the 5-foot-11-inch, 190-pounder said he hasn’t been caught off guard in his new home.

“[It’s been] a lot of what I expected to see,’’ he said. “A lot of detail at practice. Good coaching all around. So, I am excited to be here.’’

Whalen said he’s adjusted fine to fielding punts in the windy and frigid conditions of the last two days on the back fields at Gillette.

“It was fine,’’ said Whalen, who added that he’s “still not sure’’ how he’ll be deployed. “I’ve played in all sorts of weather. I’ve had indoor and outdoor practices at different places, so it was all right.’’

Whalen already has something in common with his new quarterback, Tom Brady — plenty of greens in his diet. Whalen, in fact, went vegan, eliminating meat and dairy for the last two-plus years.

“I have felt a big improvement physically,’’ said Whalen, who hasn’t discussed his diet with Brady but indicated he would at some point. “I started it not knowing if it was a long-term thing or just kind of for fun or whatever, but I felt a pretty big improvement so I stuck with it. You get significantly less inflammation from those foods and that’s a huge part of being an athlete, all the stress we put on our bodies, as far as speeding up recovery and training.’’

Amendola out

For the second straight day Amendola was the only Patriot missing from practice and he is out for Monday night’s showdown with the Ravens. Five players were listed as limited at the workout and questionable the game: Martellus Bennett (ankle/shoulder), Matthew Slater (foot), Eric Rowe (hamstring), Elandon Roberts (hamstring), and Richards (knee) . . . Defensive tackle Darius Kilgo was signed to the practice squad. Originally claimed off waivers from the Broncos Nov. 28, he was released off the 53-man roster Thursday to make room for Whalen . . . Brady’s bust will be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame someday but a little piece of him is already on display in Canton, Ohio. The Hall is currently displaying some of his game-worn gear, including the gloves from when he eclipsed 60,000 yards passing and the football from his his record-setting 201st win last week against the Rams . . . A win Monday and Brady would join Brett Favre and Peyton Manning as the only QBs with 180 career regular-season wins. Favre and Manning both have 186.
