Sharapova out of Wimbledon

Maria Sharapova is skipping the grass-court season and will not try to qualify for Wimbledon tennis championships because she has not recovered from an injured left thigh. She announced Saturday in a posting on her official Facebook account that ‘‘an additional scan’’ showed that the muscle tear she got at the Italian Open last month will not allow her to return to competition yet. Sharapova, a five-time major champion and former World No. 1, recently returned to the tour after a 15-month doping ban. She expects to return to competition for a hard-court tournament on July 31.

Panthers offer Boughner head coaching job

A person with knowledge of the situation said the Florida Panthers have offered their head coaching job to San Jose Sharks assistant coach Bob Boughner. The sides are working through details with the expectation that a deal can be finalized no later than Monday, said the person who spoke to the Associated Press on Saturday on condition of anonymity because the talks are ongoing. Boughner would become the 15th coach in Panthers history, and the fifth since 2011. Florida missed the playoffs last season in a turbulent year, one where coach Gerard Gallant was fired and replaced by then-general manager Tom Rowe. The Panthers have not won a playoff series since 1996 . . . The health of Nashville defenseman Ryan Ellis is in question after he couldn’t finish Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, and the Predators were offering no clues at all for Game 6 on Sunday night. Nashville trails the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-2. Roman Josi said his defensive partner obviously is a huge part of the Predators’ defense. Ellis had a seven-game points streak this postseason.

Point guard Freedman chooses Harvard

Standout point guard Spencer Freedman of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., has committed to play basketball at Harvard. The 6-foot-1-inch Freedman averaged 11.9 points and 6.2 assists while shooting 46 percent from 3-point range this season. He chose the Crimson over USC and the University of Washington . . . Raevyn Rogers held off USC’s Kendall Ellis down the stretch of the 4 x 400-meter relay, helping Oregon become the first-ever NCAA women’s program to win cross-country and indoor and outdoor track and field titles in the same school year. The outdoor championships were held in Eugene, Ore. Florida won the men’s title Friday.

Louisville and Texas A&M finished super-regional sweeps and became the first two teams to clinch spots in the College World Series. Cal State Fullerton beat Long Beach State, 12-0, to force a winner-take-all Game 3 Sunday. In a super-regional openers, Florida State defeated Sam Houston State, 7-6, on Jackson Lueck’s walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Evan Skoug hit a two-run homer in the eighth to lift TCU past Missouri State 3-2.

Astros’ Keuchel expects to miss two starts

Houston Astros ace Dallas Keuchel won’t begin throwing again for about a week as he recovers from neck discomfort that has landed him on the disabled list for the second time this season. He isn’t sure when he’ll return, but expects to miss at least two more starts. Keuchel has a major league-best 9-0 record and a 1.67 ERA . . . New York Yankees closer­ Aroldis Chapman struck out three and walked one in one inning during his first simulated game since going on the 10-day disabled list in mid-May because of tendinitis and bursitis in his left shoulder. Chapman threw 18 pitches against minor leaguers at the Yankees’ complex in Tampa­.

Sun continue hot play by crushing Dream

Jonquel Jones scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and the Connecticut Sun posted their first home victory of the season in beating the Atlanta Dream, 104-71. The Sun (3-5) have won three of their last four games. In Saturday’s other WNBA game, Allie Quigley scored 9 of her 16 points in overtime, including back-to-back 3-pointers, and Stefanie­ Dolson finished with 25 points to help the Chicago Sky beat the host San Antonio Stars, 85-81 . . . Mark Cockerton scored in overtime as the host Ohio Machine beat the Boston Cannons, 13-12, in Major League Lacrosse . . . Luis Solignac and Nemanja Nikolic scored and the host Chicago Fire beat Atlanta United, 2-0, in Major League Soccer . . . Matteo Mancosu scored a late goal to help the shorthanded Montreal Impact to a 1-1 draw with host Sporting Kansas City . . . Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton won the pole position at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal for the third straight year.

Artemis Racing skipper Nathan Outteridge fell overboard during a tack in Race 3 of sailing’s America's Cup challenger finals on Bermuda’s Great Sound, allowing Emirates Team New Zealand to sail ahead and take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-nine series. Outteridge slipped and flew off the boat as the crew changed sides while the 50-foot foiling catamaran was turning while going about 27 knots.
