A man was briefly hospitalized after being struck by a piece of broken bat during the first inning of Saturday’s Red Sox game at Fenway Park, team officials said.
He was seated along the third base line, behind protective netting installed at the start of the season, when a piece of bat used by Houston Astros right fielder George Springer hit him in the face, Red Sox spokeswoman Zineb Curran said.
Fenway security and emergency service personnel immediately responded to the man, she said.
The game was not stopped, she said.
The man, who was not identified, was treated at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and later released, Curran said.
The Red Sox extended protective netting along the first and third base lines at the start of this season, after fan Tonya Carpenter of Paxton suffered serious injuries after a bat struck her in the face during a game last June.
