While Gloucester Cinema is currently playing the popular movies “Ice Age: Collision Course,’’ “Ghostbusters,’’ and “The Secret Life of Pets,’’ there’s more on the marquee.

“Teatro alla Scalla: The Temple of Wonders,’’“a 90-minute journey though time and space to discover the most glorious pages in the history of music, opera, and ballet,’’ screens at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 31, and 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug, 4.

The show is part of the cinema’s monthly Art and Architecture series, presented in conjunction with SpectiCast Entertainment.

John Williams, 61, a former certified public accountant, and Mary Williams, 63, who works in sales for Verizon, bought the cinema, at 74 Essex Ave., in 2000.

They are married and live in Reading.

We talked about the business with John Williams.

Q. The beginning?

A.The theater was in horrible shape. We were fortunate that the movie “The Perfect Storm,’’ [based and filmed in Gloucester] came out just then, and we sold out for three months and did well financially. We took that money and started making improvements.

Q. Now?

A.We’ve come full circle. We’ve installed all digital equipment. And we are now installing new luxury recliners and rocking seats. We want to be competitive and not give people an excuse to go somewhere else.

Q. Capacity?

A. Three screens, and with the new seats [which take up more room] a total of 300 seats. People can go online and buy tickets and pick their seat.

Q. Cost?

A. Tickets are $10; $8 for senior citizens and 12 and younger.

Q. Audiences?

A. About half from Gloucester and the rest from other towns north of Boston. We have lots of regular customers.

Q. Other offerings?

A.We do birthday and other private parties. People have the theater to themselves and can see the latest movie and have popcorn, drinks, and cake. [Beginning at $200.] Last week, we had five of them.

Q. Art and Architecture?

A.It’s for an older crowd, probably age 50-plus, which we are trying to provide something for.We love to travel ourselves. It can be a great remembrance of a favorite trip. Or for others, a trip they may never make, but they are making it in their mind.
