The Cathedral football team thought it won its league title after its 35-0 win over Marian on Friday night at Dorchester High School. The players ran to the end zone, slid across the rain-soaked turf, celebrating the Catholic Central Small victory.
Just one problem. The undefeated Panthers (7-0) won the league after last week’s shutout of Matignon.
“We didn’t tell them last week that they clinched the league last week,’’ said Cathedral coach Paul Sobolewski. “We wanted it to be special for them, so they assumed they clinched it tonight so they were a little more excited than they should’ve been.’’
“Any time you win your first seven, you go undefeated in your league, you win the league championship, you’re happy for the kids and the assistant coaches. They work so hard.’’
Junior Khalil Blair opened the scoring with a 40-yard touchdown rush. A successful 2-point conversion gave the Panthers an 8-0 lead after one quarter.
Blair extended the lead with a 15-yard touchdown rush and senior Victor Owens added a 15-yard scoring run to put Cathedral ahead, 22-0, at halftime.
In the third quarter, Owens also scored on a 55-yard catch and run from Xavian Marrero and Manny Green capped the scoring with a 55-yard reception from Marrero.
