Any other Monday, and Jean-Yves Roy would not have been happy if Notre Dame Academy had cancelled classes amidst a light snowstorm. The flurries weren’t as bad as expected, and he wanted his daughter, Gabby, to attend school, and learn.
But Roy made an exception after Gabby and her teammates on the NDA girls’ hockey team captured the program’s first Division 2 state title with a 3-1 victory over Wellesley at TD Garden.
“We’ve all been through a roller coaster of emotions the past few days so we deserve the extra hours of sleep,’’ said Roy, a former National Hockey League player who just completed his third season as head coach.
Senior forward Julia Neelon, one of eight seniors that played on a two-win squads as freshmen, scored two goals to propel the Cougars (18-4-2).
“Freshman year, we weren’t very successful,’’ Neelon said. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think that we’d be at the Garden and winning after all of that.’’
Roy emphasized depth and conditioning. Seven players tallied double-figure points totals , led by his daughter, an eighth grader who racked up 33.
“I’ve played on some big stages,’’ said Roy, who won a silver medal with Canada at the 1994 Olympics. “But in terms of accomplishments, this ranks right at the top, right behind the silver medal.’’
