For the St. John’s Prep baseball team, the fight to help cure ALS hits very close to home.

Pete Frates, diagnosed with ALS in 2012 and an advocate in helping rise awareness for the disease, is an alumnus of the school where he played baseball before going on to have an outstanding career at Boston College.

The increased awareness helped give birth to the Catholic Conference vs. Bay State Conference Challenge to Cure ALS Tournament held Saturday at Monan Park.

So when the No. 2 Eagles came out on top of No. 6 Walpole, 4-0, it was a bittersweet victory for the entire program.

“This is home. It really hits home with us,’’ said St. John’s Prep coach Dan Letarte. “We came into this game with a purpose and I know [Pete] will look at the score and be very proud.’’

St. John’s Prep senior Zach Begin was nearly unhittable. The righthander pitched six innings of one-hit ball, striking out nine while walking three on an efficient 87 pitches.

The Eagles (7-1) broke through in the top of the second inning on Christian Kukas’s fielders choice that brought home Andrew Selima.

Defense became the Rebels downfall.

Following back-to-back errors in the sixth, Selima delivered a two-run double to double the score, 4-0.
