Newly released police body camera footage shows a 51-year-old man screaming ‘‘They’re killing me!’’ and ‘‘I can’t breathe’’ while Oakland, Calif., police officers hold him down. The man later died, and last week, the city of Oakland settled a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family for $450,000.

‘‘You’re killing me!’’ Hernan Jaramillo howled repeatedly in a five-minute video obtained by the Oakland Tribune. “I can see it!’’

Law enforcement officers were originally called to Jaramillo’s home on July 8, 2013, because his sister, Ana Biocini, reported that an intruder was trying to kill her brother. Upon arrival, there was no sign of an intruder; instead, police said in court documents, Jaramillo was exhibiting ‘‘erratic behavior’’ and refused to be handcuffed. In a statement released at the time, police said Jaramillo became unresponsive in the ‘‘ensuing struggle,’’ at which point the officers immediately attempted to resuscitate him while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive.

Jaramillo never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police did not respond to requests for comment from The Washington Post Wednesday evening.
