Clippers roll as Cavs rest stars
Associated Press

Blake Griffin scored 23 points and the Clippers capitalized on the Cleveland Cavaliers’ decision to rest their top three players with an easy, 108-78, victory in Los Angeles Saturday night.

LeBron James, Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving sat out for the Cavaliers, and the Clippers snapped their three-game losing streak by feasting on the defending champions’ supporting cast.

Cleveland’s personnel decision also allowed the Clippers to rest Griffin, Chris Paul and DeAndre Jordan for the entire fourth quarter while their reserves turned a comfortable win into a blowout.

Richard Jefferson scored 12 points to lead Cleveland in its lowest-scoring game of the season.

Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue said Love already was scheduled to sit out this game in his comeback from left knee surgery, and Irving left Thursday’s game at Utah early with tightness in his own left knee.

With the Cavs beginning a stretch of eight games in 14 days, Lue also decided to rest James instead of forcing him to play without his full supporting cast.

The Cavaliers have lost five of eight, but still lead the Celtics by 1½ games atop the Eastern Conference.

Hornets 98, Wizards 93 — Cody Zeller scored 19 points and host Charlotte snapped a three-game losing streak.

Kemba Walker had 8 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, and Marvin Williams had 16 points and eight rebounds as the Hornets handed Washington its second straight defeat.

The Hornets limited the Wizards to 37 percent shooting from the field.

Grizzlies 104, Spurs 96 — Mike Conley had 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists, Zach Randolph added 18 points and host Memphis extended its winning streak to four with a victory over San Antonio.

Memphis held an 89-86 lead with 5:45 left, then went on a 9-1 rally to match its biggest advantage of the game at 98-87 on a three-point play by Marc Gasol with 2:30 left.

Not long afterward, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich sent his reserves in.

Bulls 95, Jazz 86 — Jimmy Butler scored 23 points, Bobby Portis added a career-high 22 and host Chicago beat Utah.

In their second game without Dwyane Wade, who will miss the remainder of the season with a broken elbow, the Bulls leaned on their second team.

Denzel Valentine, who had his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, hit three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

Trail Blazers 113, Hawks 97 — Damian Lillard scored 27 points and visiting Portland took control with a dominant opening quarter to beat Atlanta.

C.J. McCollum had 22 points and Allen Crabbe added 16 for Portland, which raced out to a 17-3 lead and never trailed.

Thunder 110, Kings 94 — Russell Westbrook had 28 points, 8 rebounds, and 10 assists to help host Oklahoma City roll past Sacramento for its fifth straight win.
