?Two people were killed and three others injured Saturday after a fire engulfed a single-family home in Orange, a small town in Western Massachusetts, according to the state fire marshal’s office.

The identities of the victims were not available as of late Saturday night. It is not known to which hospitals the people were taken.

State and local fire investigators were still at the scene of the fire at 34 Mechanic St. late into Saturday night.

The origin and cause of the blaze is not yet known, said Jennifer Mieth, a spokeswoman for state Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey.

The fire was reported at 4:42 p.m. Fire crews from several Western Massachusetts towns, including Athol and Northfield, responded to the fire.

The loss of two lives has deeply shaken the town of nearly 8,000 people in the northwest part of the state.

“The town of Orange is a very tight knit community,’’ Orange Fire Chief James Young Jr. said in an interview broadcast on westernmassnews.com. “Anytime we lose a member of the community it is very difficult for us. Yes, it is a tough time and we have contacted resources for our individuals.’’

“The tragedy is especially hard to bear,’’ the Rev. Don Erickson, of the Community Church of North Orange and Tully, said in an e-mail to the Globe.

“I pray we can tap into the strength we’ve had to have to sustain the many hard-times, allow our undeniable tears to come, and then wrap the families involved in a community-wide embrace.’’

In a statement on its Facebook page, the Orange Police Department asked for healing thoughts for the community.

“It will take all the prayers, good thoughts, and kindness that you can come up with to make a small community, and [its] families begin to heal,’’ the department wrote.

The investigation is being jointly conducted by the Orange fire and police departments and State Police assigned to the state fire marshal’s office and the Northwestern District Attorney.
