Big Data: Counting gorillas

That’s the number of Western lowland gorillas estimated to have been living in Western Equatorial Africa in 2013, according to new research published in the journal Science Advances. That’s a lot of apes — in fact, it is one-third more gorillas than previously estimated. Unfortunately, gorilla populations are declining faster than was previously understood — three percent per year. At this rate, half the world’s gorillas could be gone by 2040.
