Motivated by the sting of last year’s Division 4 North semifinal loss to City League rival Fenway, New Mission senior captain Denia Davis-Stewart took the court Tuesday at Madison Park raring to help the fifth-seeded Titans knock off top-seeded Fenway in this year’s rematch.

“We were in this same exact position last year and I did not want to feel the same feeling that I felt last year,’’ Davis-Stewart said. “I was crushed, and this is my year as a senior to step up as a leader and prove everyone wrong.’’

The 6-foot-2-inch, Merrimack-bound center dominated the boards on both ends of the court, racking up 37 rebounds to go along with 11 points in a commanding 53-36 victory, giving the Titans a spot in Friday’s Division 4 North final against 10th-seeded Pope John.

“You know what, it’s something that I’m supposed to do,’’ Davis-Stewart said of her lofty rebound total. “It’s a good feeling that I’m able to do that but that’s what I’m supposed to do to make sure my team succeeds.’’

New Mission (17-5) suffered two losses to Fenway (18-4) earlier in the season, one in the City League championship.

“We decided to pick them up in the half court because when we played them full court they did pick us apart,’’ New Mission coach Mitchell Hercule said. Even though we lost by a couple of points [in the City League final], we definitely had to change it up.’’

“But it’s a great team over there, we can’t allow them to get up and down because they’ve got a lot of great athletes.’’

New Mission’s defensive adjustment shut down Fenway’s high-scoring seniors, Takora McIntyre and Jaqualah Holliman.

After New Mission jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter, junior guard Taneja Drayton drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer to push the lead to 10 points heading into the second quarter.

New Mission continued to pile on before halftime and held a 32-15 lead at the break. Drayton scored 13 points in the first half and finished with a game-high 15.

“Offensively, she’s our leader,’’ Hercule said. “Defensively, Denia’s our leader, and they both stepped up to the plate today.’’

Senior captain Kayla Kelley chipped in with 13 points for New Mission. McIntyre also finished with 13 to lead the Panthers.

“It felt good, it felt really good,’’ Davis-Stewart said. “I made sure my team stayed very humble and did not give up the lead and that’s what we did.’’
