MEDINA – Had Michigan won, he would’ve been done.

Luckily for Scott Wenmoth, selecting Villanova as his bracket’s champ made him the champ – but just barely.

“I beat the second place guy by one pick!” said Wenmoth, a first-time Goal Post March Mania Challenge player. “I knew I’d be up late watching this game. I kept saying ‘There’s no way!’ I was jumping around.”

Wenmoth walked away with $500 – donated by The Galaxy Restaurant and Wadsworth – and said he planned to take his wife, Dina, to dinner in celebration. He also planned to hang the oversized novelty check in his “man cave.”

His strategy? Not thinking about it too hard, but still trying to pick a good balance of upsets versus predictability.

“There’s really nothing to it,” he laughed. “I actually feel bad. Some people really get into it, breaking down every little number and statistic.”

Wenmoth, a resident of Medina, found himself hooked on the college basketball action until the very end, thanks to the great prizes up for grabs each week. He said it didn’t hurt getting to watch former Medina Bee Jon Teske, Michigan’s seven-footer in the middle, and former North Royalton Bear Omari Spellman, Villanova’s small forward, duke it out in the title game.

“How awesome it was getting to watch two kids from northeast Ohio,” Wenmoth said.

The Wenmoths have two children – Josh, 8, and Anna, 3.

“They’re even excited I won,” he said.

Wenmoth has taught physical education for the last 19 years at Edwards Middle School in Brunswick, where he also coaches track.

“Just unbelievable,” he said of the win.
