Gronkowski completed his first official workout since arriving in the United States ahead of his expected start in the Belmont Stakes on June 9. The colt breezed 4 furlongs in 47.99 seconds at Belmont Park in New York on Saturday for Chad Brown, who has taken over training duties from Europe-based Jeremy Noseda. The colt, named for Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski (who owns an interest in the horse), has four wins in six starts in Britain. Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Justify will try to become horse racing’s 13th Triple Crown winner by winning the Belmont . . . Victor Espinoza and Accelerate rallied in mid-stretch to win the $500,000 Gold Cup at Santa Anita in California by 4¼ lengths over Dr. Dorr, trained by Bob Baffert. Accelerate ran 1¼ miles in 2:01.38 and paid $5.80, $3, and $2.10 at 9-5 odds. Dr. Dorr returned $4.20 and $2.60 and had his three-race winning streak snapped. City of Light, the 6-5 favorite, paid $2.20 to show in the Grade 1 race.

Indians’ Miller is back on DL
Indians reliever Andrew Miller is back on the 10-day disabled list, this time with inflammation in his right knee, and there’s no timetable for his return. The lefthander gave up three runs in an 11-2 loss to Houston Friday night. Miller was on the DL from April 26-May 11 with a strained left hamstring. He is 0-3 with a 14.55 ERA in six games since being activated . . . The Cubs placed Yu Darvish on the 10-day DL with right triceps tendinitis, continuing a rough season for the righthander. Darvish is 1-3 with a 4.95 ERA after finalizing a $126 million, six-year deal with the Cubs in February . . . Clayton Kershaw pitched a four-inning simulated game, raising the possibility that he could be back in the Dodgers’ rotation next week. The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner has been on the disabled list nearly a month with left biceps tendinitis.
Marlins third baseman Martin Prado was placed on the 10-day DL with a strained left hamstring, an injury that could be career-threatening after hamstring and knee issues limited the 34-year-old to 37 games last year . . . The Cardinals placed struggling reliever Greg Holland on the 10-day DL with a right hip impingement. Holland’s ERA ballooned to 9.45 following a bumpy inning of work Friday night in an 8-1 loss to Pittsburgh . . . Injured Orioles closer Zach Britton is scheduled to start a rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple A Norfolk. The lefthander is coming back from right Achilles’ tendon surgery.

UMass Boston wins D3 title
The UMass Boston women’s track and field team tied for the NCAA Division 3 Outdoor Championship with George Fox (Ore.) in La Crosse, Wis. The Beacons’ Wadeline Jonathas won the national title in the 200 meters (23.90 seconds) and 400 meters (54.90), and Taylor Driggers was best in the triple jump (12.56 meters). UMass Boston also won the women’s Indoor Championship in March.
South Africa’s Caster Semenya set a meet record in the 800 meters at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore., defending her title in the event in 1 minute, 55.92 seconds, which is also the top mark in the world this year. American Ajee Wilson was second in 1:56.86.

Fulham earns way back into Premier League
Fulham secured a return to the Premier League after four years away and a windfall of at least $210 million by beating Aston Villa, 1-0, in the second-tier English playoff final. By winning the sport’s richest single game, Fulham guaranteed future additional revenue of at least 160 million pounds ($210 million) from prize money and broadcast deals, according to the sports business group of accountancy firm Deloitte. Fulham is owned by Shahid Khan, owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars . . . New York Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles was honored in a pregame ceremony for the conclusion of the longest Ironman streak in MLS history. Robles sat out due to a knee injury, ending his streak of 183 games dating to September 2012.

Sun (3-0) keep up hot start
Alyssa Thomas had 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting and Courtney Williams added 11 points, 7 rebounds, and career-high-tying 6 assists in the Connecticut Sun’s 86-77 victory over the Indiana Fever at Uncasville, Conn. The 3-0 Sun are off to their best start in 10 seasons. The Fever (0-5) tied their franchise record, set in 2001, for consecutive losses to open a season . . . UFC middleweight fighter Nick Diaz was arrested in Las Vegas on allegations of domestic violence. Clark County jail records indicate Diaz, 35, was booked Thursday night on suspicion of domestic battery by strangulation but was no longer in custody. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Diaz was arrested after police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance involving a man and a woman. A formal criminal complaint was not filed immediately.
Froome closing in on Giro d’Italia title
Britain’s Chris Froome effectively sealed the Giro d'Italia title by holding his only remaining challenger in check up the final climb of the three-week race. The four-time Tour de France champion takes a 46-second lead over defending champion Tom Dumoulin into Sunday’s mostly ceremonial finish in Rome and is poised to win his third consecutive Grand Tour, matching the achievements of cycling greats Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault . . . Daniel Ricciardo took a dominant pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix, softening the blow for Red Bull after teammate Max Verstappen failed to even start qualifying, having earlier crashed in final practice. Ricciardo topped all three sections of qualifying, setting a lap record in the process for only his second career pole.
