Wayland senior Ramazan Attasauov was confident he would ultimately face St. John’s Prep junior Ryan Garlitz in the 132-pound final at the MIAA All-State wrestling championships. So too, was his coach, Sean Chase.
Everyone in attendance at St. John’s Prep saw the match coming. The ending Saturday afternoon, however, was a bit stunning.
Attasauov emerged with a 3-2 victory to deal Garlitz his first loss of the season. Attasauov claimed his second All-State title after winning at 126 last year.
Leading by a point with less than 10 seconds left, Attasauov simply needed to avoid a takedown. However, as the timekeeper went to the mat to let the referee know the remaining time, Garlitz took down Attasauov.
Luckily for Attasauov, time had run out.
After a discussion among the two referees, the timekeeper, and St. John’s Prep coach Manny Costa, Attasauov had his hand raised, upping his season record to 48-1.
“It feels good, but I would be happier if that last thing hadn’t happened,’’ said Attasauov, who was named Outstanding Wrestler of the championship for the lower weights. “I was just upset with myself, and from this time, I know I have to wrestle right until it ends.’’
Now Attasauov will turn his attention to the New England tournament next weekend in Providence. The top seven finishers from the All-State championships advanced.
“I have been working hard,’’ Attasauov said. “We’ll see what’s going to happen, but I’m ready.’’
At 170 pounds, Chelmsford senior Joe Vecchione continued his strong postseason with a 4-0 win over Springfield Central’s Dohnivin Harvey to help propel the Lions to the team title.
Chelmsford (87.5) edged Springfield Central (81), and Nashoba Regional (77).
At 126 pounds, Brockton’s Cole Wyman won his third All-State title with a 5-1 win over North Andover’s Joey Valentino.
Nashoba’s Lucas Cordio (160) was the Outstanding Wrestler for the upper weights.

Reading coupled depth and star power to capture the MIAA North title at Algonquin Regional, qualifying for the state meet for the first time since 2004. The Rockets amassed 143.725 points to nose out Masconomet/Lynnfield (141.975) and Dracut (136.750). Andover (135.925) also qualified for Saturday’s state meet in Shrewsbury.
Masconomet freshman Gracy Mowers won the all-around with a score of 37.250, followed by Reading’s Hannah Whitney (35.900) and Masco’s Nicole Bonacorso (35.850).
Whitney, who earned silver in the floor (9.325), boosted Reading’s place on the leaderboard. But coach Zach Stein said the Rockets’ reemergence was far from an individual effort.
“Everybody. All our lineup is so good,’’ said Stein. “We just put the whole thing together.’’
The vault — an event in which Emily Eagleston clinched the second spot and, later, fifth in the all-around — set the tone for what would be a victorious morning.
“The energy was way up,’’ said Stein. “We took it from there.’’
Madeline Doyle (9.425) clinched first on the beam for the Rockets.
“We looked back at the routines [of the last few weeks] and took out some of our difficulty, and made it cleaner,’’ said Stein. “And it worked for us.’’
Mowers sent Masco sailing into second, collecting gold in the vault (9.650). On her winning floor routine (9.600), she opened with a perilously difficult double pike, a feat she plans to replicate next weekend.
“This is the team finals,’’ said Mowers. “The bigger the moves, the better.’’
South — Freshman Erin Hurley won the all-around (37.625) with victories on the bars (9.700) and vault (9.625) to propel Mansfield to the sectional crown at Algonquin.
“I got a 9.7 with a tough judge who doesn’t normally give scores that high,’’ said Hurley. “I had to make my handstands work.’’
The Hornets (146.450), who dubbed themselves the “Killer Bees’’ on homemade black T-shirts, edged defending state champion Bridgewater-Raynham/West Bridgewater (145.325). Medfield/Ashland/Dover-Sherborn (143.675) and Medway/Holliston/Millis (140.550) also qualified for the state meet.
“We had a lot of kids out on injury today,’’ said Mansfield coach Nikki Longo. “The kids that we do have stepped up in a big way.’’
Mansfield sophomore Kira Goldmanclaimed second in bars (9.400), fifth in vault (9.425). Teammate Lily Goulding landed third on beam (9.350) and seventh on floor (9.100).
“We relied on bars,’’ said Longo. “But they hit it on vault because they knew we didn’t have the depth we normally do.’’
B-R/WB sophomore Olivia Keyesplaced second all-around (37.150), thanks in part to her high marks on the beam (second, 9.500) and the floor (third, 9.250). Sophia Cutler of MADS earned the bronze (36.975), finishing fourth in the vault, bars, and beam events.
