Todd Frazier hit his 25th homer, Jose Quintana bested Julio Teheran in the majors’ first all-Colombian pitching matchup, and the host Chicago White Sox held off the Atlanta Braves, 5-4, on Saturday.
Frazier, who will go for his second straight Home Run Derby title during All-Star Game festivities Monday, hit a two-run shot in the second and an RBI double in Chicago’s three-run third off Teheran (3-8). The All-Star allowed five runs and nine hits over six innings after missing his last start with an infection in his right thigh.
Quintana (7-8) won his second straight start despite giving up home runs to Gordon Beckham, Jeff Francoeur, and Freddie Freeman in six innings.
A Colombian flag hung outside a suite down the left field line to celebrate the milestone. The pitchers were born about 25 miles apart in the northern region of Bolivar.
Jose Abreu and Melky Cabrera hit consecutive RBI singles in the third, helping the White Sox rebound from a loss to the last-place Braves in the series opener.
Chicago had scored 13 runs in Quintana’s last 10 starts. With a strong wind aiding fly balls, the left-hander allowed four runs and five hits, but he got the support he needed this time around.
Atlanta had chances in the last two innings.
Zach Duke replaced Quintana and got four straight outs. Chase d’Arnaud then doubled off Matt Albers. After a groundout, the White Sox walked Freeman intentionally.
Nate Jones then struck out Nick Markakis, who had hit three homers in two games.
Jones allowed one-out singles to Adonis Garcia and A.J. Pierzynski in the ninth, and then threw a wild pitch to put runners at second and third. Jones struck out Erick Aybar before walking ninth-place hitter Ender Inciarte intentionally to load the bases.
But Jones got his third save by retiring d’Arnaud on a grounder to third on the first pitch.
Tigers 3, Blue Jays 2 — Victor Martinez hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning as Detroit stopped host Toronto’s seven-game winning streak. Justin Upton had two hits and Andrew Romine reached base three times for the Tigers, who had lost seven of their previous nine against Toronto.
Hampered by an injured left knee for much of 2015, when he hit .245 with 11 home runs, Martinez has returned to his productive self this season. He’s hitting a team-high .309 with 17 home runs and 52 RBIs.
‘‘It just shows you how much we missed him last year,’’ manager Brad Ausmus said.
Bruce Rondon (3-1) earned the win despite allowing a tying home run to Devon Travis in the seventh. Rondon missed the first two games of the series with flu-like symptoms.
Justin Wilson pitched the eighth and Francisco Rodriguez finished for his 24th save.
Martinez broke a 2-all tie with a one-out drive off Jason Grilli (3-3).
While he’s happy to be healthy again, Martinez said he’s focused on more than just his own statistics.
‘‘I’m worried more about the team,’’ he said. ‘‘I don’t really pay attention to the numbers. I just want to win.’’
Matt Boyd allowed one run and four hits in five innings for Detroit. He was recalled from Triple-A Toledo to start in place of Daniel Norris, who has a strained right oblique.
‘‘He did an excellent job,’’ Ausmus said. ‘‘He did exactly what we needed him to do.’’
The Tigers loaded the bases against Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez with nobody out in the second but Toronto got a double play to limit the damage.
Left fielder Ezequiel Carrera caught Steven Moya’s fly ball and threw home in time to retire Martinez, who was attempting to tag up from third.
Ausmus said Martinez made the decision to run on his own.
‘‘It took a perfect throw to get him,’’ Ausmus said. ‘‘I think he was using little a bit of stealth there.’’
Jarrod Saltalamacchia walked to load the bases a second time before Romine drove in the game’s first run when he was hit by a pitch.
Saltalamacchia made it 2-0 in the fourth with a two-out RBI single. Carrera cut it to 2-1 with an RBI triple in the fifth.
Nationals 6, Mets 1 — Daniel Murphy had three hits and drove in four runs, including a two-run homer in the seventh off reliever Antonio Bastardo to help visiting Washington defeat New York. Max Scherzer (10-6) went seven strong innings, allowing one run and three hits while recording nine strikeouts.
Cardinals 8, Brewers 1 — Jhonny Peralta, Tommy Pham, and Aledmys Diaz homered, helping Carlos Martinez and St. Louis beat host Milwaukee. Peralta hit a leadoff drive in the second off Chase Anderson (4-10). Pham connected for a solo shot and Diaz belted a three-run homer.
Martinez (8-6) struck out a season-high 11 in five innings in his first win since June 11. The righthander allowed one run and four hits with four walks.
Athletics 3, Astros 2 — Oakland righthander Kendall Graveman pitched into the ninth to hold a hot club to five hits in Houston. A’s catcher Stephen Vogt collected three hits, including a home run, and two RBIs to finish a triple shy of the cycle.
Giants 4, Diamondbacks 2 — After a brief outing by starter Jake Peavy, San Francisco’s bullpen shut down Arizona with 4? hitless innings. Grant Green had the decisive blow for the host Giants with his two-run homer in the fourth inning to erase a 2-1 deficit.
Yankees 7, Indians 6 — Brian McCann hit an RBI double to left off reliever Tommy Hunter with two outs in the top of the 11th to help visiting New York outlast Cleveland. Aroldis Chapman (3-0) was credited with the win after striking out Mike Napoli to end the game.
Orioles 3, Angels 2 — Jonathan Schoop scored the tying run on a balk then drove in the winning run with one out in the ninth on a single to center that scored Manny Machado as host Baltimore edged Los Angeles.
Marlins 4, Reds 2 — Martin Prado had three hits, including a go-ahead two-run double in the fifth inning, and Giancarlo Stanton added an insurance run with his RBI single in the eighth to lift host Miami.
Royals 5, Mariners 3 — Salvador Perez homered and made a key pickoff throw, trapping Kyle Seager off first base in the eighth, to help host Kansas City beat Seattle. Perez, the World Series MVP, hit a solo home run off the foul pole in the seventh.
Dodgers 4, Padres 3 — Brandon McCarthy won his second straight start after a 14-month recovery from Tommy John surgery, and host Los Angeles scored a disputed go-ahead run to beat San Diego. Corey Seager scored from second on a throwing error to first by Padres shortstop Alexei Ramirez.
Pirates 12, Cubs 6 — Josh Bell hit a grand slam and Jordy Mercer hit a solo homer, both coming off Adam Warren, to highlight a five-run outburst in the fifth for host Pittsburgh.
Rockies 8, Phillies 3 — Tony Wolters broke open a 2-2 stalemate with a three-run triple to highlight a six-run eruption in the bottom of the sixth for host Colorado.
