Boston police are investigating a fatal shooting that left a teenager dead Friday night in Roxbury, police said.

The 18-year-old man was shot at about 8:53 p.m. near 180 Ruggles St., just a short walk from the Boston police headquarters. When officers arrived, the man appeared to have multiple gunshot wounds, police wrote on their website.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Inside 180 Ruggles St. on Saturday afternoon, the hallways were mostly quiet, with just the sound of music and television shows coming from behind a few apartment doors.

On the floor in front of each apartment, there was a pamphlet left by the Boston Public Health Commission after the shooting. The title was “Healing after trauma.’’ Underneath it said, “How to deal with bad things that happen to you, your family and your community.’’

Standing outside the building, 17-year-old Bryana White, who also lives in Roxbury, said she had mutual friends with the victim but did not know him well.

She said he enjoyed telling jokes and had a big smile. “He was always there for you, like a brother,’’ she said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Boston Police homicide detectives at 617-343-4470.

People can also anonymously contact the department by calling the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1-800-494-TIPS or by texting the word “TIP’’ to CRIME (27463).
