At Univision, mission is to inform and empower, not to take a political side

Ilan Stavans’s recent Ideas piece (“Become a great American, watch Univision’’) was correct in pointing out the important role media — and specifically Univision — play in informing and educating audiences. However, Stavans notes that our campaign to urge Latino voters to register to vote “is being criticized for being ideologically biased.’’ Such criticism ignores the facts. Our owners and senior members of management fall on all sides of the political spectrum, and any suggestion that their beliefs affect the way we execute on our mission of entertaining, informing, and empowering US Hispanics is wrong. I am sure that, like Univision, The Boston Globe also adheres to strict journalistic guidelines to protect against partisanship and bias.

At Univision, we will never waver from our commitment to inform and empower the community we serve by delivering honest, nonpartisan information and resources. We take this responsibility very seriously, and for almost 60 years we have been dedicated to providing Hispanics with access to culturally relevant information and resources in their language.

As our community grows, so do our efforts. Empowering the more than 27 million Hispanic eligible voters to participate in the election gives them a voice in the US democracy they’re entitled to as citizens. Univision’s objective is to help enable its community to have a political voice, regardless of party affiliation, as their full participation in the political process will only make our country stronger.
