With winter finally here, you may be longing to sit in front of a toasty fire — or dreaming of barbecuing summer meals on your deck.
In either case,Yankee Fireplace & Grill City has something for you.
The company has been selling, installing, and servicing fireplaces, stoves, and grills for 30 years.
It has two large showrooms, 10,000 square feet in Middleton and 8,900 square feet in Arundel, Maine.
The company sells wood, gas, pellet, and electric fireplaces and stoves, as well as glass fireplace enclosures, accessories, tools, and decorative pieces.
Grill offerings are freestanding or built-in, gas, charcoal, and electric.
We talked with the company’s general manager, Alan Davis, 44, of Methuen.
Q. Popular fireplaces?
A.Gas is predominant, whether new construction or a remodel. Many households have natural gas, which is not expensive and is clean-burning. Having a gas fireplace installed in an existing home costs $3,500 and up.
Q. Pellets?
A.In 2008, when oil prices escalated, burning pellets as an alternative fuel took off. With oil and gas prices down, it is not as popular.
Q. Wood?
A. We have glass enclosures for those keeping masonry fireplaces to burn wood or a gas log system. They are custom made for the fireplace. It’s more energy efficient and becomes a part of the room’s décor.
Q. Cost of grills?
A. $300 to more than $9,000.
Q. Other offerings?
A.Patio and lawn furniture, awnings and shade structures, even insect control products, as well as outdoor fireplaces and heaters.
Q. Customers?
A.Ninety percent of the business is residential, direct to homeowners, for both older and newer homes. And we do some commercial applications (like restaurants).
Q. Most important?
A.Service is key. We have techs employed year round to take care of units. That’s not common in the industry. We also will service units that we didn’t install.
Q. What’s new?
A. Voice-recognition grills. Once the grill is lighted, it works through your phone, iPad, or other device. The unit can learn your common recipes and cooking times and update you on the time and when the food is nearly done. No one wants to sit around a smoky grill anymore. They want to mingle. The industry continues to evolve.
