Julien, Canadiens outlast Rangers

Paul Byron scored in the fifth round of the shootout and Mont­real beat the New York Rangers, 3-2, Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden to give coach Claude Julien his first win in his second stint with the Canadiens.

Shea Weber and Andrew Shaw scored in regulation for Montreal, while Carey Price made 28 saves.

The Rangers’ Mats Zuccarello opened the shootout with a goal and Montreal’s Alexander Radulov tied it in the third round.

Rick Nash and Oscar Lindberg scored in regulation for New York. Henrik Lundqvist made 26 saves.

Lundqvist stopped Max Pacioretty halfway through overtime and Montreal’s Tomas Plekanec also hit the post late in the period.

Maple Leafs 5, Jets 4 — Jake Gardiner scored at 2:29 of overtime to lift host Toronto over Winnipeg.

Leo Komarov had two goals, William Nylander and Nazem Kadri also scored, and the Maple Leafs jumped back into the second wild-card spot in the East.

Patrik Laine scored twice for Winnipeg, becoming the first rookie in franchise history to record 30 goals in a season. Nikolaj Ehlers and Bryan Little also scored.

Flames 6, Predators 5 — Mark Giordano scored 43 seconds into overtime as Calgary rallied in Nashville after blowing a 4-1 lead.

Mikael Backlund’s second goal of the game tied it at 10:50 of the third, Micheal Ferland added two goals, and Dougie Hamilton scored.

Johnny Gaudreau had four assists.

Filip Forsberg had a hat trick in the second period, and Colin Wilson and P.K. Subban each had a goal and an assist for Nashville.

Penguins 3, Hurricanes 1 — Sidney Crosby scored the go-ahead goal on a deflection in the second period, and Pittsburgh won at Carolina.

Evgeni Malkin and Scott Wilson also scored, and Matt Murray made 29 saves for the Penguins.

Jeff Skinner had the Hurricanes’ lone goal, while Cam Ward stopped 19 shots.

Senators 2, Devils 1 — Kyle Turris and Erik Karlsson scored, Craig Anderson made 29 saves, and Ottawa won in New Jersey.

Travis Zajac scored for New Jersey, and Cory Schneider made 21 saves.

Islanders 3, Red Wings 1 — Calvin de Haan scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period and New York opened a nine-game road trip by beating Detroit.

De Haan’s shot was stopped by Petr Mrazek, but the rebound went off Detroit defenseman Xavier Ouellet and the back of Mrazek’s left leg and into the net.

Josh Bailey and John Tavares also scored, and Thomas Greiss stopped 26 shots for New York.

Henrik Zetterberg scored for Detroit. Petr Mrazek had 19 saves.

Lightning 4, Oilers 1 — Ondrej Palat scored twice and Nikita Kucherov had a goal and three assists for host Tampa Bay.

Vladislav Namestnikov added an empty-netter and Ben Bishop stopped 20 shots for the Lightning.

Iiro Pakarinen scored his first goal of the season for the Oilers.

Backup Laurent Brossoit finished with 24 saves in defeat.

Blackhawks 5, Wild 3 — Jonathan Toews had a hat trick and two assists as Chicago won at Minnesota.

Nick Schmaltz and Richard ­Panik also scored for the Blackhawks.

Mikael Granlund scored twice on the power play for the Wild and Zach Parise also scored.

Chicago’s Corey Crawford had 29, while Minnesota’s Devan Dubnyk stopped 34 shots.

Kings 2, Avalanche 1 — Trevor Lewis got the go-ahead goal in the second period, Tyler Toffoli scored, and Peter Budaj made 24 shots as Los Angeles won at Colorado.
