A man in his 20s died after being shot in Roxbury Saturday night, according to police.

Officers responded to a call for a person shot near Kendall Street and Shawmut Avenue around 10:51 p.m. Saturday, according to a statement from the Boston Police Department.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, with an apparent gunshot wound.

No arrests were made, according to Officer Stephen McNulty, a Boston police spokesman.

As a young man on a bicycle rode by the scene Sunday afternoon, he stared at a stuffed animal and two candles in the middle of the Lenox Street Apartments courtyard, where residents say the victim fell after being shot.

A woman, who didn’t want to give her name, said she was returning from a birthday party in Randolph when she found caution tape cornering off her home. Police were processing the scene and she couldn’t get her 5-year-old and 17-month-old to bed, so she drove back to Randolph for the night, she said.

“I wasn’t going to wait for them to be done,’’ she said. “My kids were already asleep in the car.’’

A man who lived in a building nearby said he was putting his children to bed when he heard gunfire and peered through his blinds. He said he was in fear after the shooting and did not want to give his name.

“The noise. It was like cannon shots,’’ the man said.

He said a crowd of people ran when the victim fell and the police arrived right after that.

“It’s like walking a gauntlet when you leave your house here,’’ he said. “You never know what people might do to you.’’

Some residents were coming home from church or shopping Sunday, while other talked outside homes. No one wanted to give their name to a reporter.

“It so sad,’’ one woman said. “Somebody lost their child.’’

Police are asking anyone with information to call the Boston Police Homicide Unit at 617-343-4470 or the tip line at 1-800-494-8477.
