KABUL — The Taliban killed 13 police in an attack on a checkpoint early Sunday in Kunduz province. Hayatullah Ameri, chief of the Khan Abad district, near where the attack took place, said only one officer escaped alive.
A Taliban spokesman claimed the attack.
Afghan forces have struggled to combat a resurgent Taliban since US and NATO forces concluded their combat mission at the end of 2014, switching to counterterrorism.
A wave of attacks this month targeting security forces has killed more than 200 people. On Saturday, at least nine policemen died in separate Taliban attacks on checkpoints in Ghazni province.
In another development, police said Sunday that the deputy governor of Kunar province had vanished in Peshawar, Pakistan.
A senior Pakistani police officer, Mohammad Tahir Khan, said Qazi Mohammad Nabi Ahmadi was in the city for medical treatment. Khan said Pakistani authorities were not informed of the visit until a relative lodged a complaint about his ‘‘disappearance.’’
Khan said a special team was carrying out a search.
