Greek teen Stefanos Tsitsipas upset Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, on Thursday in the Rogers Cup. The 19-year-old Tsitsipas broke the ninth-seeded Serb’s serve early in the third set and held serve from there to reach his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarterfinal. Djokovic, a four-time Rogers Cup champion, faded late on a warm, breezy afternoon at Aviva Centre on the York University campus in Toronto. Tsitsipas set up match point with a scorching cross-court winner before completing the win in 2 hours, 17 minutes . . . In the women’s competition in Montreal, US Open champion Sloane Stephens advanced to the Rogers Cup quarterfinals with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Carla Suarez Navarro.

A’s acquire reliever Rodney
The Oakland Athletics added to their bullpen depth by acquiring righthanded closer Fernando Rodney from the Minnesota Twins for minor league righthander Dakota Chalmers. Rodney, 41, who is 3-2 with 25 saves and a 3.09 ERA in 46 relief appearances for Minnesota this season, will join a stellar bullpen that includes former Mets closer Jeurys Familia along with Blake Treinen and Lou Trivino . . . The Cleveland Indians placed Leonys Martin on the 10-day disabled list due to a non-baseball-related condition but were not certain if the outfielder would be out longer after he became sick Tuesday . . . The Los Angeles Dodgers reinstated righthander Ross Stripling (inflamed right toe) from the 10-day disabled list in time to start Thursday night’s game against the Rockies with an 8-3 record and a 2.68 ERA
. . . Adair “A.J.’’ Bayatpour, a former Milwaukee television reporter, reached a plea deal for punching a reporter from another TV station at a Brewers baseball game in Miller Park in April, avoiding a felony record under the deferred prosecution agreement.
. . . Mexican infielder Japhet Amador was suspended for six months by Nippon Professional Baseball for a doping violation. Out since Aug. 3 with abdominal pain, the 31-year-old slugger tested positive for chlorthalidone and furosemidey. Both are banned diruetics used to treat high blood pressure and mask the presence of performance-enhancing substances in the bloodstream.

Wake Forest coach charged
Wake Forest assistant basketball coach Jamill Jones, 35, of Kernersville, N.C., turned himself into authorities on a misdemeanor assault charge after he punched and killed a New York City tourist on Sunday who mistook Jones for an Uber driver. The tourist, Sandor Szabo, a digital marketing guru from Boca Raton, Fla., fell and hit his head on the sidewalk, police said. He never regained consciousness and died after he was taken off life support on Tuesday . . . Kansas State signed 78-year-old football coach Bill Snyder to a five-year contract through the 2022 season. The new deal increases his salary to $3.45 million this season.
Snyder has a career record of 210-110-1, and is coming off an 8-5 season that ended with a bowl win . . . Louisiana State suspended sophomore linebacker Tylor Taylor, who is facing charges in connection with a firearms theft Jan. 8 from a pawnshop in Georgia . . . Police arrested a 17-year-old girl who had a pair of shoes believed to have been stolen in a July 29 burglary of the home of Nebraska football coach Scott Frost, who was still missing several pairs of athletic shoes, football helmets and artwork.

Stewart eyes Indy 500 return
Tony Stewart, a retired three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion who grew up in Columbus, Ind., is considering a return to the Indianapolis 500 next year. Stewart, who will turn 48 next May, has won twice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in NASCAR’s Brickyard 400 but has never been able to win the Indy 500, where he has five starts (the last in 2001) and started on the pole as a rookie in 1996 and leading 64 laps in a career-best fifth place in 1997.
‘‘If I go, I’m not going just to run it,’’ he said. ‘‘I don’t want to be a sideshow like Danica [Patrick, a former teammate] was at Indy this year. If I go, I want to go feeling like I’ve got the same opportunity to win that everyone else in the field does.’’
. . . Speedway Motorsports Inc., the parent company of New Hampshire Motor Speedway, promised NASCAR fans a ticket credit if a race is postponed because of weather at any of its eight race venues. Fans with an unused ticket will have 60 days from the original race date to request a credit.

Atletico Madrid inks Croatian forward
Atletico Madrid signed Croatia forward Nikola Kalinic from AC Milan to a three-year deal. Kalinic, 30, was sent home from the World Cup after he refused to come on as substitute in the opening game against Nigeria, citing a back problem . . . Zlatko Dalic will remain as coach of Croatia’s national team after leading it to the World Cup final. The Croatian soccer federation said president Davor Suker met with Dalic to discuss the coach’s future

A Europa League third-round qualifying match between Sturm Graz and AEK Larnaca in Austria was suspended for a half-hour in the 78th minute Thursday after a drink cup forcefully thrown from the stands hit Fredrik Klyver, a Swedish assistant referee, on the head and knocked him to the ground . . . The Austin City Council was scheduled to vote on a new 20,000-seat stadium plan that could trigger a move by Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew to the Texas state capital.

Ex-referee Stewart in Hall
Paul Stewart, a native of Dorchester who was the first American referee to officiate 1,010 NHL regular-season games, was one of two inductees with local ties to the US Hockey Hall of Fame class of 2018. He was joined by another Massachusetts hockey legend in the late Leland “Hago’’ Harrington, who attended Melrose High and went on to a lengthy professional career before passing away in 1959. Former Michigan coach Red Berenson, former US women’s national team captain Natalie Darwitz, and former Nashville Predators and Washington Capitals general manager Dave Poile will also be inducted in Nashville on Dec. 12.
“I’m just a rough-around-the-edges kid from Dorchester and Jamaica Plain who would do anyting to be at the rink,’’ Stewart said in a blog post on Hockeybuzz.com. “When I look at the company that I am being inducted with in the US Hall — the best officials, the great players, coaches, and builders of the game in our country — it is humbling.’’
