Stewart eyes Indy 500 return

Stewart, who will turn 48 next May, has won twice at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in NASCAR’s Brickyard 400 but has never been able to win the Indy 500, where he has five starts (the last in 2001) and started on the pole as a rookie in 1996 and leading 64 laps in a career-best fifth place in 1997.

‘‘If I go, I’m not going just to run it,’’ he said. ‘‘I don’t want to be a sideshow like Danica [Patrick, a former teammate] was at Indy this year. If I go, I want to go feeling like I’ve got the same opportunity to win that everyone else in the field does.’’

Former Michigan coach Red Berenson, former US women’s national team captain Natalie Darwitz, and former Nashville Predators and Washington Capitals general manager Dave Poile will also be inducted in Nashville on Dec. 12.
