The Medway field hockey team, seeded 16th, upset top-seeded Seekonk, 2-1, Thursday in a Division 2 South first-round game that went to penalty strokes.

“I’m just beyond excited for the girls,’’ said Mustangs coach Mary Ellen Hasenfuss, now in her 46th year at the helm. “They’ve worked so hard this year . . . We try to go out and play our game, and that’s what we did today and that’s what we’re going to continue to do.’’

The Mustangs (9-5-3) took an early lead when sophomore forward Emily Dawson managed to control the ball in a scramble in front of Seekonk’s net and fire a shot past the goalie. The Warriors tied the game 17 minutes into the second half as Chloe Lunnie took a pass from Liza Gagnon and sent it into the back of the net.

After battling through 60 minutes of regulation, the teams went into a sudden-death overtime period, this time playing seven-on-seven with just three defenders. Both teams got good looks on goal but were unable to net the winner.

Double overtime led to just two defenders per team, which really opened up the attacking chances.

“We were tired, but I think we’re very well-conditioned,’’ said Hasenfuss. “I think once they saw that they were able to move the ball, they got going . . . We had a couple of corners with just two defenders and got some rocket shots, but just went wide.’’

The Mustangs chose to shoot first in penalty strokes at the request of senior goalie Rachel Hall.

After both teams missed on their first attempt, Nikki Moorad and Rachel Tarbox both put away their penalty strokes for Medway. Hall came up big in net, making four saves to secure the win.

Medway moved on to face ninth-seeded Apponequet in the quarterfinals. Despite taking out the top seed in their bracket, the Mustangs know they must stay humble.

“It should speak the world to them about what they’re capable of doing,’’ said Hasenfuss. “Having them get this victory is something that will help them to build as we move forward. We’re not cocky. We’re the 16-seed, we just snuck into the tournament. But we’re really focused, and this win will help us be confident moving forward.’’

Methuen 3, Medford 0 — The fifth-seeded Rangers (16-5) took advantage of attack mistakes and unforced errors in dismissing the Mustangs, 25-11, 25-15, 25-12, in a first-round matchup in Methuen.

Methuen coach Matt Twomey had confidence in his team, noting the strength of his roster.

“It was a good win for us. We had played them once earlier in the year, they’re a solid team. But I feel like we have a really strong team,’’ Twomey said. “We can play with anybody that we come across.’’

Medford coach Taylor Dyer took note of her team’s effort in light of its early exit.

“I’ve had these girls for four years, and they’ve come a really long way. I’m super proud of them for making the tournament in general,’’ Dyer said. “It wasn’t their best game, but they worked hard and I’m really proud of them.’’

Leading the way for the Rangers was junior Abby Sullivan with 17 kills and four blocks. Senior Jacqueline Cassidy showed stellar serving, contributing 5 aces, 5 kills, and 11 digs.

While Medford (9-10) took an early lead in the third set, Methuen’s serving proved too strong, pushing forward with a 7-point run to close out the game.

“I thought we played really strong defense,’’ Cassidy said. “But I think we can still improve on some defensive plays, and we’re just looking to have our best game next round.’’
