STANDING ROOM ONLY

More than 1 million Facebook users “checked in’’ on the Standing Rock Reservation Facebook page this week to virtually stand in solidarity with members of the Sioux tribe protesting the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. And though to some it may seem like another instance of “slacktivism,’’ it’s actually proven to be a fast, effective technique to increase national awareness of the conflict. Much like how simply checking in to your local polling place and writing “TRUMP’’ in the comments is a fast, effective way to cast your vote. (Trust me, folks.)

LET’S MAKE A DEAL

Speaking of reliable information, according to a post on a popular Chinese blogging website, a woman from Shenzen convinced each of her 20 suitors to buy her an iPhone 7. She then sold the phones to a tech resale company for a neat profit of nearly $18,000, which she promptly put toward a down payment on a house. You go, girl! Update: Turns out it was probably just a marketing hoax, but man, that felt really good for five seconds, believing in something.

SYMBOL STATUS

It’s a 21st-century Pinocchio story, as Shruggie (the emoticon of resolute indifference that I named 2014’s Thing of the Year) will soon be transformed from a semiotically suggestive pile-up of punctuation to a real emoji, thanks to the magic of the Unicode Version 9.0 update. In other glyphic news, the peach emoji has been redesigned, leaving millions without a nonverbal way to say “butt.’’ Win some, lose some.

DRAG RACE

Halloween was officially won by an 8-year-old boy seen on Twitter serving yellow-pantsuited Hillary Clinton realness. The tweet (which made clear that his hair was #notawig) has nearly 5,000 retweets and 15,000 likes, and has predictably attracted an onslaught of aggressive trolling. And while the trolling didn’t upset the boy, he was a little bothered that he had to trick-or-treat twice as hard to earn just 80 percent of the candy the other kids were getting.
