The BC High hockey team was an overtime goal away from a return trip to the Super 8 final last March.

But the Eagles are now 0-2-0 after falling to Don Bosco Prep (N.J.) in a 4-1 setback on Saturday at Walter Brown Arena. BC High now faces a matchup against another New Jersey program, Delbarton, on Sunday afternoon.

Three days after losing to Central Catholic — the same team that ended their season in the Division 1A semifinals — the Eagles watched Don Bosco Prep strike for a pair of first-period tallies in the opening 3 minutes, 12 seconds.

“We like to see different teams; they’re good teams, [and] they’re well-coached. So, it’s good for us,’’ said BC High coach John Flaherty.

“[Don Bosco was] better than us, they outplayed us all over the ice, and maybe it’s a good wake-up call for us.’’.

Fifty seconds into the contest, junior center Michael Forgione cashed in on an Ironmen two-on-one, tapping home a one-timer past BC High’s Chase Congdon.

Forgione slammed the puck home from the doorstep of the Eagle crease, immediately to Congdon’s left.

About two minutes later, the Ironmen (6-0-1) struck again, with Tristan Frese unleashing a shot from the point for a 2-0 lead.

And while the Eagles settled in on defense – turning up their physicality to slow down the Ironmen offense – Don Bosco never broke.

Led by goaltender Max Schwarz (24 saves), the Ironmen held off BC High’s attempts, especially on a five-on-three in the second period.

“Max really wanted this game,’’ said Don Bosco coach Greg Toskos. “He played last year against BC High in his first varsity game and came up just short.

“[Our defense] makes real good plays, not only poke-checking, [and] sticks-in-the-lane type things, but outlet passes up to our guys,’’ Toskos added. “That limits the opponents chances, the fact that we’re able to move the puck up ice quickly.’’

Don Bosco’s smothering penalty kill yielded another score as Tyler Sedlak converted a shorthanded opportunity with 11:55 to go in the middle frame. The junior took the puck in the neutral zone and skated in alone on Congdon, before lifting it over the netminder’s left shoulder.

Sedlack rounded out the scoring with 2:22 to go in the third, firing a shot past Congdon from the high slot.

The Eagles got on the board when Mav Woods cleaned up a rebound in front of Schwarz with 11:56 to go, but it proved BC High’s lone goal of the game.
