

Marblehead resident John D. Nash, chief executive of Boston’s Franciscan Children’s, which provides health care and education to children with special needs, has been elected to the national Children’s Hospital Association’s board of trustees. Nash previously served as chief executive of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. “As a community, children’s hospitals collaborate to continually improve care for our patients and their families,’’ Nash said. “It is a privilege to champion children’s health with my colleagues across the nation as we work toward solutions to address the unique health care needs of children.’’
The Merrimack Valley Housing Partnership has announced its home-buyer training class schedule for 2017. Classes are held at Lowell’s Middlesex Community College (67 Middle St., Classroom 405) and also are offered online. The program is designed to help prospective home buyers learn about mortgage applications, household budgeting, down payment assistance programs, and other aspects of buying a home. A training class for landlords also is available. All seminars may be taken in English, Spanish, or Khmer, and class times vary by language. The English home-buying classes are from 6:30-9 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays over four evenings, the next classes are March 14, 15, 21, and 22. Spanish classes are consecutive Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 4 and 11. Classes in Khmer also are held Saturdays, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 25 and April 1. Cohen Hillel Academy in Marblehead is seeking nominees for its Adam Madorsky Social Justice Alumni Award. Madorsky, who died in 2016 at 49, was the son of Karen and Jerry Madorsky and brother of Daniel Madorsky. The award aims to honor alumni of Cohen Hillel who have demonstrated a commitment to social justice and their communities. In addition to the award, the school will make a donation to the winner’s choice of charity. Nominees must be an alumnus of Cohen Hillel Academy; of college age or older; demonstrated an action in response to injustice; currently participate in an ongoing social justice project; and willing to share their experience with current students. Gloucester firefighters Joseph DeSalvo and Jak Letien have graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Stow, bringing the department’s ranks close to full strength. DeSalvo and Letien are both certified paramedics who joined the department in 2016. Letien, previously of Minnesota, was commended during his time at the academy with the Richard N. Bangs Outstanding Recruit Award, which is given to the training class’s highest performer. DeSalvo is a Gloucester native, Salem State University alumnus, and, prior to his academy graduation, worked full time as a lobsterman.
Manchester-by-the-Sea’s health insurance provider, The Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association, has awarded the town with a “Best Progress in Wellness’’ award for its dedication to the health of its municipal staff. Manchester has invited its public works employees to a training program on driver fatigue; subsidized a program that delivered fresh food to its staff; and also offered mindfulness and weight-loss workshops. The town is part of the Massachusetts Working on Wellness grant program, and has established a local wellness committee to handle employee outreach.
