New Hampshire’s Waterville Valley Resort, whose ubiquitous blue-and-green bumper stickers adorn the cars of many New England skiers, announced this week that it has started construction on a new ski area.

The 45-acre slope, dubbed “Green Peak,’’ will initially feature 10 new lift-serviced trails and should be ready for this winter, the company said in a press release. More details of the overall $2 million project, the resort’s first expansion in over 30 years, are set to be unveiled Wednesday morning.

The ski trails on Green Peak in the White Mountain National Forest were approved by the US Forest Service in 2013, which will lease the land to Waterville Valley. Construction was supposed to have been completed in 2014; a spokesman for the resort said construction is beginning now because the company just obtained financing for the work.

The company spokesman said the trails on Green Peak, which is adjacent to the resort’s main runs on Mount Tecumseh, would span a range of terrain from beginner to expert.

Waterville Valley got its start in the 1960s and quickly became one of the region’s most popular ski resorts. However, the resort’s original owner went bankrupt in the 1990s, and it has changed hands several times since.

New England’s ski industry is hoping to bounce back this winter after a disastrously warm 2015-2016 season.
