San Francisco vs. Boston: a world of difference in transit riders’ etiquette

Adam Vaccaro’s article “T looks at barriers as a crowd control option’’ (Page A1, July 5) reminded me of the first time I took the Bay Area Rapid Transit from San Francisco to the East Bay. I noticed many single lines of patient people formed toward the empty track. Because I am from Boston and accustomed to mayhem while waiting for trains, I asked someone what the lines were for. The person gave me a dumbfounded look, along the lines of “How can you not know that,’’ and said, “We’re in line for the train.’’

I then did what I never do in Boston: went to the end of the line to wait for my train.
