A 17-point performance by Keelah Dixon and staunch defensive execution led the third-ranked Braintree girls’ basketball team past Kelly Fogarty and No. 13 Walpole, 57-40, at Walpole on Tuesday night.
Dixon, a senior, posted 11 of her game-high 17 points in the first half and junior Mackenzie Moore added a trio of 3-pointers to give the Wamps (13-2) a 38-22 advantage at the break.
“I think we focused on the things we needed to focus on and made a few mistakes here and there,’’ said Dixon, who has committed to play at Colgate. “But we played great defense and played as a team, and that’s why I think we got the win today.’’
Sophomore Adriana Timberlake added 11 points for the Wamps, whose up-tempo offense and unselfish style of play gave Walpole (10-5) fits.
“We’ve been moving the ball really well,’’ said Braintree coach Kristen McDonnell. “I think everybody’s looking to get everybody else involved. I think there’s a lot of trust from player to player that whoever gets the ball will do something really good with it, so you can see that resonate in the offense.’’
Fogarty, a senior committed to the University of Maine, was held to 7 points, 3 in the first half, against tight coverage from Braintree’s Jenna Roche.
“Kelly’s a great player and she demands a lot of attention,’’ said McDonnell. “To her credit, she didn’t seem to get frustrated, she stayed within herself. Any time we get the ball out of her hands, it’s a good possession for us.’’
Freshman Sydney Scales led the Rebels (10-5) with 11 points.
“I think we matched their intensity, I think we matched their attitude. I don’t think we matched their execution,’’ said Walpole coach Dave Wall, who is a graduate of Braintree High. “It’s all the little things that make them great. They get offensive rebounds, they turn them into points. They get steals, they turn them into points. It’s really tough to account for their team speed.’’
For Braintree, Tuesday’s game was the first of two matchups with Globe top 20 opponents this week — both on the road. The Wamps face fourth-ranked Newton North Friday.
Dixon and her teammates relish these challenges.
“For me, and I think this goes for my team as well, we get excited,’’ she said. “We live for those games. Those are the games that are important, fun, and we can show how good we really are.’’
