In virtually every letter to Globe Santa asking for help on the holiday, there is a common acknowledgment: We know it’s not only about us; you are also taking care of families who have less than we do. And so it is with a single mother of two from a town south of Boston who recently wrote:
“If you choose to help us, know that we would not want to take away from any family that is way worse off than us. But choose us because my two young kids are soldiers and they will pull through even if they feel defeated.’’
In her letter, she made the case in a single paragraph:
“I am a household of three with a work income of $370 a week, if I work 30 hours that week. That income doesn’t do much but pay bills and try to cover food costs. If the program thinks we are worth helping, I would say my kids deserve to be happy at Christmas. We have gone through homelessness, living in a car, temp housing, while not knowing where we will be in December. My kids don’t complain. When I cry and feel defeated, they come and rub my back and say, ‘Everything will be okay, Mummy. God is watching out for us.’ That is what I tell them, and it seems like they are listening. LOL!’’
