Actor and comedian Steve Sweeney has done his fair share of traveling, but he is itching to visit a country with a large population of Buddhists. “I’ve met a lot of people from Thailand, and I find them and their way of life interesting,’’ he said. Sweeney, who is from Charlestown and now lives in Quincy, has been in more than 20 movies including “The Equalizer,’’ “Me, Myself and Irene,’’ “There’s Something About Mary,’’ and the soon-to-be-released “Bleed for This,’’ about the life of boxing champion (and Cranston, R.I., native) Vinny Pazienza. He is also touring in a one-man comedy show called “Townie,’’ and will perform at next month’s Boston Comedy Festival. We caught up with Sweeney to talk about all things travel.
Favorite vacation spot? I mix it up. I love Wyoming, Montana, and Europe — especially the Greek islands. It is absolutely unforgettable when you see Mykonos or Santorini from the ferry. It’s life changing. The parks in Utah are breathtaking as well — especially Zion and Bryce Canyon.
Favorite food or drink while vacationing? It doesn’t matter, as long as I overeat. I like to come back morbidly obese.
Where would you like to travel to but haven’t? I would like to go to a Buddhist country like Nepal, Myanmar, or Thailand to experience their way of life. I would love to hike in the more mountainous countries. I’d also like to go to Tibet, but I’d probably get sad.
One item you can’t leave home without when traveling? I have to bring a new book for the airport and the flight.
Aisle or window? I love the window. A lot of times when I’m flying I’ll tell people I’m a security guard because they usually have no interest in that so they leave you alone. There’s nothing worse than being on a five-hour flight and having someone next to you telling you jokes or asking you how you got started in the business.
Favorite childhood vacation memory? The White Mountains. It’s cliche, but the Kancamagus Highway in northern New Hampshire [a 34-mile scenic highway that stretches from Lincoln to Conway] is still magic.
Guilty pleasure when traveling? Magazines, magazines, and magazines.
Best travel tip? Don’t be afraid to address the brat behind you who’s kicking your seat. Only the parents think he’s cute. Be polite to all employees — you never know when they can sneak you an upgrade. Also, never visit LA unless you have to — and don’t arrive in the afternoon. And finally, don’t go down to the Cape on Friday afternoon, since you won’t arrive until Sunday morning!
