Thirty-four years ago, there was a boy desperate to make something of himself. Having spent his childhood in a small town outside of Pittsburgh, he had hoped for a better life, one full of hard work, compassion, and a belief that he could make the world a better place.

After being the first in his family to graduate from college, he took the leap, traveling to Ohio to start his new life. Over 60 successful businesses and a short stint in Congress later, that boy got to hear the president of the United States, an other-worldly successful businessman himself, dedicate his presidency to building a safe, strong, and proud America.

That boy was me. This past week at the State of the Union, President Donald Trump pledged just that and outlined his past achievements and future hopes for our nation.

Chief among them was tax reform. Having a background as a CPA and being a member of the tax-writing committee, I was lucky enough to have an instrumental role in drafting this bill that will increase American’s take-home pay while decreasing their tax burden. This bill will do just as the President described: “Provide tremendous relief for the middle class and small businesses.”

The business tax rate was slashed from 35 to 21 percent so they can compete worldwide and make America the center of business again. So far, hundreds of businesses have announced pay raises and bonuses thanks to the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act, and this is only the beginning on America’s comeback.

Since the president’s election, the Dow Jones has seen 96 new record closing highs. The stock market continues to skyrocket at an unforeseen rate with no sign of slowing down. The president’s pro-growth approach to our nation has led us to an era of economic success that I could not have seen after eight years under the Obama administration.

This past year has also seen the president appoint a strong Supreme Court Justice in Neil Gorsuch, someone who will interpret the Constitution as written and defend American ideals.

America is on a new track, one that puts American citizens first. This new era is for America by America, and is essential to making America safer, stronger and prouder.
