In 2006, Built by Beads was launched in a custom-built kiosk at the Natick Mall by Michelle Buchman of Marlborough, Michelle’s son Justin, and Sharon Paulo of Hyde Park. With a wide assortment of beads and jewelry-making supplies, customers designed their own pieces to match clothing they had just purchased.
Relocating to a storefront in Wayland last June has enabled the business to expand its existing products and add new services. While Justin left the business to pursue other career goals in 2013, Buchman and Paulo had this to say:
Q. What has changed since becoming a brick-and-mortar business?
Buchman: We’ve evolved into a lot more than a bead store. Sharon and I have had to think outside the box to make the business work because we both have such passion for it.
Q. How have you done that?
Buchman: We offer parties, classes, and women’s nights out, and we do so many watch batteries and repairs that it’s almost a business of its own. Everything is moving online, so on our website, customers can design their own keepsake pieces for wedding parties and other one-of-a-kind jewelry without leaving their homes.
Paulo: This is a fun place to be because we genuinely care, which is why our motto is, “We do whatever it takes.’’ A couple brought in a stained glass piece, and I soldered a chain onto it so they could hang it up. We pick up and drop off jewelry repairs at assisted living facilities. I’ve even fixed picture frames. It’s all about helping one another create a better society.
Q. Did you expect your work to be so rewarding?
Buchman: It has always been important to us to give back. We support the community with fund-raising events, and our awareness jewelry is a form of both education and empowerment for people and families afflicted with cancer and other illnesses.
Q. What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs?
Paulo: I’m an upper extremity amputee, and I make jewelry with my prosthetic. I believe that a lot of success is your attitude. We didn’t listen to all the people who said, “It’s just a hobby. You’ll never make anything out of it.’’ We’re not making millions, but we’re getting something that money can’t buy: a smile on someone’s face.
