A man died Sunday in an early-morning fire that began in a trailer and then spread to an adjacent home in the central Massachusetts town of Dudley, according to fire officials.
Dudley Fire Chief Dean Kochanowski said a 61-year-old man living in the small travel trailer died in the three-alarm fire on Raymond Street.
“The guys made a good stop at saving the house,’’ Kochanowski saidin a telephone interview. “But unfortunately there was somebody in the trailer, and he didn’t make it.’’
The cause of the fire, which was called in to the fire department just before 7 a.m., is under investigation, said Kochanowski, but it does not appear to be suspicious. “We can’t pinpoint a determination yet, but it definitely looks like it’s an accidental fire,’’ he said.
State Police assigned to the state fire marshal’s office and the Worcester district attorney’s office are assisting with the investigation. The victim’s name has not been released.
Kochanowski said a man who is believed to be the victim’s brother lived in the house and ran out of the building to seek help from neighbors.
A next-door neighbor who would not give his name said he was awakened by the noise outside. The man said by telephone that the people who live in the home are “very quiet.’’
Kochanowski said the fire destroyed the trailer and caused up to $125,000 in damage to the home after it spread.
Firefighters from Southbridge, Auburn, Oxford, and Webster responded to the scene. Quinebaug, Conn., which adjoins Dudley, also sent fire crews to help put out the blaze. Kochanowski said around 40 firefighters were present Sunday.
