Condon sparks Senators
Associated Press

Mike Condon made 27 saves in his Ottawa debut and the host Senators blanked Vancouver, 1-0, on Thursday night, the fourth time the Canucks have been shut out in five games.

Mike Hoffman scored the lone goal for the Senators (7-3-0).

Jacob Markstrom made 23 saves for the Canucks (4-6-1), who have lost seven straight (0-6-1).

Ottawa made the most of a giveaway by Erik Gudbranson at the 14-minute mark of the second period as Markstrom tried to play the loose puck, but instead left a wide-open cage for Hoffman.

Condon, 26, a native of Holliston, Mass., who was acquired from Pittsburgh for a 2017 fifth-round draft pick, arrived in Ottawa Wednesday after a long day of travel from Los Angeles. He was on the ice for Thursday morning’s skate and was given the start.

Condon made his first NHL start last season in Ottawa, on Oct. 11, as a member of the Montreal Canadiens and posted a 3-1 victory.

Condon could also get the nod in goal Saturday against Buffalo as Craig Anderson has taken an indefinite leave to be with his wife, Nicholle, who was diagnosed with cancer.

Andrew Hammond remains sidelined with a groin injury and is expected to miss at least another week.

Despite having played just one period of hockey this season, Condon looked solid by making a number of key saves throughout the game.

Condon made a number of stops in the third to keep the Canucks off the board, including two on Jannik Hansen and Sven Baertschi.

Panthers 4, Devils 3 — Vincent Trocheck scored two goals, including the winner in overtime, to lift host Florida over New Jersey.

Trocheck poked in a rebound past Cory Schneider with 43.4 seconds left in overtime.

Denis Malgin and Aaron Ekblad also scored for the Panthers and James Reimer made 33 saves. Reimer started in place of Roberto Luongo, who has lost his last three starts.

Pavel Zacha, PA Parenteau and Travis Zajac scored for the Devils and Schneider stopped 25 shots.

Zacha tied the score 3-all with 3:55 left in the third period. Zacha’s shot from the slot beat Reimer for his first NHL goal.

The teams traded goals 20 seconds apart early in the third.

Trocheck extended the Panthers lead to 3-1 when he took a nice feed from Jaromir Jagr in the right circle and one-timed the puck past Schneider at 4:29.

The Devils answered when Parenteau took a pass from John Moore in the right circle and beat Reimer to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Devils closed to 2-1 on a power-play goal by Zajac, whose shot was blocked but deflected off the skate of Panthers defenseman Alex Petrovic and into the net with 1:56 left in the second.

After going 0 for 7 on the power play in Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to Boston, the Panthers converted on their first two opportunities.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal by Ekblad. Keith Yandle passed from the slot to Ekblad high in the left circle. Ekblad’s one-timer got by Schneider with 7:02 left in the first.

Florida stretched its lead to 2-0 on Malgin’s power-play goal at 6:44 of the second. Malgin’s shot from low in the right circle went past Schneider’s glove. The 19-year-old recorded his first NHL goal on Tuesday against Boston.

Flyers 3, Islanders 2 — Claude Giroux scored the only goal in Philadelphia’s shootout victory over host New York.

Travis Konecny and Jakub Voracek also scored for the Flyers, who improved to 6-5-1 with their third straight victory. Michal Neuvirth made 25 saves for the Flyers

Dennis Seidenberg and John Taveres had goals for the Islanders.

Despite both teams struggling to stop their opponents, neither scored in the first period. Philadelphia outshot New York 14-8 in the period and 42-27 for the game.

Konecny got the Flyers on the board in the second period. He corralled a stretch pass from Radko Gudas and fired a shot that Halak stopped, but the goalie wasn’t able to control the rebound and Philadelphia’s rookie center put in his second goal of the season.

It also marked only the fourth time this season that Philadelphia scored the first goal and was also the Flyers’ league-leading 21st second period goal.

The lead lasted for all of 8:20, as Tavares tapped in a power-play goal with 29 seconds left in the period. The goal was Tavares’ fifth overall and his second on the power play.

The Islanders went ahead 2-1 on Seidenberg’s goal with 7:05 left. It was his fourth of the season. Voracek tied it with less than a minute left when he put in his seventh goal of the season.

New York dropped to 4-6-1 with its fourth loss in five games.

Capitals 4, Jets 3 — Alex Ovechkin scored his second goal of the game in overtime, and host Washington rebounded after blowing a three-goal lead in the third period to beat Winnipeg for its fourth consecutive victory.

The Capitals took a 3-0 lead on goals by Nicklas Backstrom, Ovechkin, and T.J. Oshie.

Tobias Enstrom, Adam Lowry, and Marko Dano scored in a nine-minute span for the Jets to tie it.

It was the third time in 11 games this season Winnipeg overcame a three-goal deficit in the third period to force overtime.

Braden Holtby stopped 24 shots to beat the Jets for the second time in three days.

Winnipeg starter Michael Hutchinson made 28 saves.

While building a 3-0 lead on goals scored from 11, 13 and 12 feet out, the Capitals looked to be in total control. They had 18 shots to the Jets’ five in the second period, but miscues made things interesting in the third.

Holtby came out to try to poke the puck away and missed, and as teammate John Carlson flipped over him, Enstrom was able to flip the puck into an empty net for a short-handed goal. It was Enstrom’s first goal since Feb. 25.

Lowry scored off a play orchestrated by All-Star Dustin Byfuglien a few minutes later, and Dano tied it with less than 9 minutes remaining to make an impression in his season debut. Kyle Connor hit the post behind Holtby with 1:26 left, as the Jets came that close to winning in regulation.

But the Capitals picked up the extra point thanks to Ovechkin’s one-timer during 3-on-3 play 3:21 into overtime. The goal was Ovechkin’s sixth of the season.

Rangers 5, Oilers 3 — Rick Nash scored the tiebreaking goal with 1:21 remaining to lead host New York over Western Conference-leading Edmonton.

Nick Holden fired a shot from the point that was blocked by Edmonton’s Milan Lucic. Nash corralled the loose puck and fired it past Oilers goalie Cam Talbot.

Kevin Hayes had a goal and two assists, Michael Grabner and J.T. Miller each had a goal and an assist, and Jesper Fast also scored for New York, which rallied from three one-goal deficits and won for the sixth time in seven games.

Nick Holden had two assists and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 21 shots.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Patrick Maroon and Adam Larsson scored for the Oilers, who lost their third straight (0-2-1) after starting the season 7-1-0. Talbot made 26 saves in his first game against the Rangers since being traded to Edmonton on June 27, 2015

Larsson put the Oilers ahead 3-2 at 8:49 of the third with a slap shot from the point for his first goal of the season. The defenseman was acquired from New Jersey in a trade for Taylor Hall in the offseason.

Fast tied it 42 seconds later as Brandon Pirri fired a shot from the point and Fast, streaking across in front, tipped it past Talbot for his first of the season.

The Oilers took a 2-1 lead just past midway through the second as they converted on a 2-on-1 breakaway. After a turnover by the Rangers, Edmonton’s Jesse Puljijarvi skated up the right side and toward the net, waited while New York defenseman Dan Girardi went sliding by on his back, and backhanded the puck to Maroon, who fired it past Lundqvist.

The Rangers had most of the chances the rest of the period, outshooting the Oilers 9-1.

Grabner tied it with 4:14 left in the middle period with his sixth of the season. Hayes brought the puck up the right into the corner, dropped it to Miller, who sent it in front of the goal and Grabner fought off Larsson and sent a wrister past Talbot.

Nugent-Hopkins got the Oilers on the scoreboard first with his first of the season. With the Fast serving a double-minor for high-sticking, Jordan Eberle’s centering pass from the left corner deflected in off Connor McDavid’s skate to Nugent-Hopkins, who fired it in from the right side of the net at 6:36.

McDavid’s assist on the goal gave the Oilers’ 19-year-old captain at least a point against every NHL team he’s faced other than Carolina. He has yet to play Boston, Chicago, Florida, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay.

Hayes tied it about two minutes later as Brady Skjei’s point shot from above the left faceoff circle was stopped by Talbot, and Grabner got the rebound and sent a nifty pass across the front of the goal to Hayes, who fired it into the wide-open net. It was the Rangers’ second shot of the game.

Blackhawks 4, Avalanche 0 Marian Hossa scored two goals and Corey Crawford made 38 saves for his second shutout in three games, leading host Chicago past Colorado for its fourth straight win.

Maple Leafs 2, Sabres 1 — Mitchell Marner scored two goals and Toronto defeated Buffalo for its first road victory of the season. Frederik Andersen made 42 saves for the Maple Leafs.
