WADSWORTH – The plant stands the students of the Salvation Army Learning Center are in the process of painting are in a way just like the kids themselves – each one is unique with its own personal flair.
Madison Proffitt was busy April 27 painting her stand to look like a red and white mushroom.
“It was a little difficult yesterday, but today it’s going pretty good,” she said.
Jacob Klusti was creating a stand with a watermelon theme. The stand was already painted green and red and he was preparing to paint on seeds and stripes.
Lindsey Kercher, director of the learning center, said the kids are painting the wooden stands so they will be available for sale at the Salvation Army’s Annual Community Dinner. Proceeds will benefit the Salvation Army’s educational programs.
“Our theme at the dinner this year is ‘Health, Healing and Hope,’” Kercher said. “So with the stands we went with the theme of ‘Growing Hope’ so each of the stands has a plant or nature theme. Some of them are similar themes, but each one is different.”
Caesar Carrino, who sits on the board of the Salvation Army, made each of the 21 wooden stands.
“I think the kids are having a lot of fun with them,” Kercher said. “I don’t think painting furniture is something kids typically get to do. We are going to clear coat them, so they have a nice finished look.”
Anyone interested in purchasing one of the plant stands needs to attend the community dinner which will be May 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Galaxy. Admission is $35 and includes dinner and dessert. For more information, call the Salvation Army at 330-335-2327.
“It’s a night for us to basically give our report to the community about what we have done over the last year and how we have served the Wadsworth community and what plans we have for the future,” Kercher said. “We will also have some people there speaking who have benefited from our program. They plan to share the ways the Army has impacted their lives.”
The Learning Center is a program for Wadsworth City School children in grades 1 through 6. In order to be part of the program, children need a referral from their teacher. The Learning Center is housed at the Charles Parsons Administration Building and there is also a middle school program that takes place at Wadsworth Middle School.
