It was the shot heard ’round the school as Lexington girls’ basketball player Anna Kelly became the all-time leading scorer in school history, passing legend Ronnie Lee, in a 57-29 win at Winchester on Tuesday night.

Kelly, a senior, ended the game with 1,803 career points.

“I didn’t even realize I had broken it until after the game,’’ said Kelly, who launched a 3-pointer in the third quarter for the historic shot. “Coach [Steve Solly] called everybody over and told us what happened.’’

Kelly said that on the bus after the game, she and her teammates had to look up on the Internet to find out exactly who Ronnie Lee is.

“I had no idea how big of a basketball player [Lee] was. I looked and saw he was drafted into the NBA and thought that was really cool I broke his record,’’ said Kelly.

Lee went to Lexington High from 1969-72 and was the 10th pick in the 1976 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns after playing his collegiate career at the University of Oregon. He is considered one of the top basketball players to come out of New England.

“For Kelly to surpass Lee is a testament to just the type of player she is,’’ said Solly.

Needing just 16 points to surpass Lee’s mark (1,794), Kelly did that and then some, pouring in 24 points to lead Lexington (13-4) to victory.

Kelly is averaging 25 points, 8 rebounds, 7 steals, and 4 assists per game.
