Battling through hurricane-force winds, near-freezing temperatures, and dropping visibility, crews spent two days this week rescuing a woman injured on New Hampshire’s Mount Washington.

The hiker, Kathleen Maguire, 56, of Antrim, N.H. was on the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail with two other people Tuesday morning when she hurt her ankle, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said.

They were about one-fifth of a mile from the nearby Appalachian Mountain Club Lake in the Clouds Hut. AMC rescuers hiked to Maguire’s location and fitted her with a splint, then brought her to the facility around 4:30 p.m., the fish and game department said.

She would have to remain there until the next day, amid rough conditions that made it impossible for a helicopter to airlift her off the mountain.

“Based on the medical assessment . . . it was determined that she would stay overnight at the hut and see what the weather was in the morning,’’ fish and game officials said. “On June 8 it was again determined that the weather was no better and temperatures were going to drop and winds increase.’’

Instead of the helicopter, a group of about 25 rescuers hiked down Wednesday from the top of the mountain to reach the hut a mile-and-a-half away. They put her in a mountain rescue stretcher and carried her back up to the summit, where a vehicle drove her down the auto road at 2:30 p.m.

“That’s what it takes to do a rescue,’’ Fish and Game Lieutenant Wayne T. Saunders said. “It’s very labor-intensive.’’

According to the agency, Maguire was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Concord, N.H. She could not be reached for comment.

Saunders lauded the rescuers, who he said were properly prepared to endure the temperatures in the mid- to low 30s and the slick mountainside.

This incident shows that hikers should be prepared to face any unforeseen circumstances, Saunders said.
