The Globe’s timely and impassioned exhortation to Senator Susan Collins, imploring her to channel Margaret Chase Smith, is insightful and deeply appreciated (“Sen. Collins must lay claim to courage,’’ June 4). Alas, those of us who are increasingly deeply troubled by President Trump’s ignorant and abhorrent behavior should not hold our collective breath waiting for Collins to pay heed. There is nothing in her track record to indicate that the Maine Republican has the fortitude to assert this type of seminal leadership.
Despite all the excellent points that were spelled out in the editorial, there is one glaring omission. As the chief recommender for Jeff Sessions at the start of his confirmation hearings for attorney general, Collins proffered such over-the-top praise on behalf of all aspects of Sessions’ character, personality, and career that it should be lodged in her legacy. As Sessions has self-destructed, Collins has not uttered a word of regret for having been his principal sponsor for one of America’s most important Cabinet positions. She has egg splattered all over her face, and I don’t see her as being capable of responding to your clarion call.
In short, Collins is no Margaret Chase Smith.
