It doesn’t have to take a royal wedding to lift our spirits

Yvonne Abraham’s “Seeking a break from the awful’’ (Metro, May 20) reflects the common explanation for our fascination with the royal wedding. That is, we need an outsized distraction from the day-to-day misery that fills the news. As a social worker, I’m well aware of suffering and injustice. I wonder, though, whether we might better recognize all the cause for celebration close to home and in the larger world? We have the choice to take a break from the awful every day, not just on the rare exception. The Globe is one news source I look to that balances the bad-news stories with those that offer hope and encouragement.
