Spring training report

WEDNESDAY’S WEATHER: It was 59 degrees and rainy. The Sox canceled their on-field work and closed the gates to fans at Fenway South. So much for the first day.

FUNDAMENTALLY SPEAKING: The plan was for the pitchers to work on comebackers, covering first base, and fielding bunts. That was all scrapped. The pitchers who were scheduled for bullpen sessions did their throwing in the covered batting cages.

PLAYER OF THE DAY: Here’s to Jonny Miller. Alex Cora and Dave Dombrowski acknowledged the presence of the WBZ Radio reporter at their respective press conferences. Miller suffered a stroke en route to Game 3 of the World Series last fall and spent much of the winter recovering. But he returned for his 47th year covering the team. Cora said Miller was his comeback player of the year.

SCHEDULE: The Sox are set to take the field at 10 a.m. Thursday. The forecast is for sunshine.
