‘Whinos’
Perhaps you’ve heard of RINOs — “Republicans in Name Only’’ — the put-down used by conservatives against their more moderate Republican brethren. But who are the Whinos? That’s an insult leveled against right-wingers who carp about Republicans who aren’t ideologically pure enough. The term was first popularized by former Idaho governor Phil Batt a dozen years back, but it has been resurrected amid this year’s tumultuous GOP presidential primary. “Whinos’’ are deeply conservative; their enemy is not so much ISIS or Vladimir Putin or Hillary Clinton — but rather GOP establishment figures who, they say, keep the party from success. For Republican presidential candidates, appealing to both RINOs and Whinos seems a tall task indeed.
