Recent bird sightings in Western Massachusetts (as of Aug. 25) as reported to the Massachusetts Audubon Society.
A black tern and a red-necked grebe were at Winsor Dam on the Quabbin Reservoir.
An immature little blue heron was present for two days at the Holyoke Dam.
The numbers of migrating common nighthawks seen on evenings have increased.
An American coot was noted in Lenox.
A Wilson’s snipe and a mourning warbler were found in Williamstown.
Pectoral sandpipers were reported in Greenfield and the town of Washington. An American bittern continues to be heard and seen in Washington.
Two black-crowned night-herons were reported in Springfield’s Forest Park.
Great egrets continue to be found in good numbers in Holyoke, at the Arcadia Sanctuary, and in Longmeadow.
The three sandhill cranes continue in Worthington.
Uncommon species reported included common merganser, ruffed grouse, common loon, double-crested cormorant, green heron, Northern harrier, osprey, Cooper’s hawk, sharp-shinned hawk, broad-winged hawk, merlin, and peregrine falcon.
Additional sightings include killdeer, greater yellowlegs, solitary sandpiper, least sandpiper, semipalmated sandpiper, American woodcock, barred owl, great horned owl, chimney swift, Eastern kingbird, blue-headed vireo, barn swallow, rough-winged swallow, fish crow, red-breasted nuthatch, winter wren, yellow warbler, pine warbler, Nashville warbler, Canada warbler, indigo bunting, and vesper sparrow.
