After her Super Bowl national anthem, and two weeks before her performance at the Oscars, Lady Gaga is going to do a tribute to David Bowie at the Grammys. I guess she’s as good a choice as anyone in the mainstream; she’s yet another performer profoundly influenced by Bowie’s changing faces, his pushing of aesthetic boundaries, and his message of self-acceptance. She’s also the right person to solidify Bowie’s status with younger generations who didn’t live through his prime solo years. Let’s see if she does the job justice, or if she delivers overblown cover versions that, as is her wont, are just a little too belted out and dramatic. It has been fascinating to watch Gaga’s career arc since her 2008 breakthrough. She arrived as a kind of gimmicky post-Madonna pop star, and many outside her mass cult dismissed her as too commercial and a passing fashion. Now, with every TV appearance (including her “Sound of Music’’ tribute at last year’s Oscars) and every go at the American songbook, she surprises those naysayers by simply being able to sing better than Madonna.
