Ortega’s movements detailed in Brady case

The search for Tom Brady’s Super Bowl LI jersey took an inter-agency effort.

Authorities including the Houston Police Department, NFL security, Patriots security, and the FBI examined media footage from inside the locker room to help piece together what happened.

ESPN posted a detailed account of how officials identified the suspect, Martin Mauricio Ortega, a former executive at the Mexican tabloid Diario La Prensa. Here are the interesting bits from that piece:

How things unfolded in front of Brady’s locker

During their examination of footage, authorities saw Ortega go into the locker room behind Patriots coach Bill Belichick. A few minutes after 10 p.m., Brady put his shoulder pads in his Patriots-issued equipment bag and put his game jersey in his personal bag.

“The folded jersey was earmarked for an unzipped black leather handbag — an oversized man-purse of sorts — stuffed neatly with Brady’s personal items,’’ said the ESPN report. “He put the jersey in that bag and left to remove the eye black.’’

While Brady was removing his eye black, Ortega made his way to Brady’s locker, crouched down and removed the jersey from Brady’s bag, placed it in a black plastic bag, tucked it under his arm and darted. When Brady returned to his locker, he noticed the jersey was gone from his bag and alerted Patriots equipment assistant Brenden Murphy.

“It was in my bag,’’ he said, according to the ESPN report. “I absolutely 100 percent put it in my bag. Someone took it, B.’’

How agencies identified and tracked down Ortega

Officials sifted through about 20,000 credentials issued for Super Bowl LI. Based on the description of the man in the video, the pool was narrowed down to about 1,400.

“At photo 847, they identified Ortega. Around the same time this was happening, an FBI tip came in on Ortega. He had posted something on a since-deleted social media account about having a Super Bowl XLIX jersey.’’

Another Super Bowl gem was found

Not only were Brady’s two most recent Super Bowl jerseys found, but also recovered was the helmet of Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller of the Broncos.

“The items are in the process of being authenticated, but there is strong evidence to believe that it is Miller’s helmet because inside there were stickers — one each for the US Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. Those stickers were specific to the missing helmet Miller wore in Super Bowl 50.’’
