Holy confusion, Batman.
A Quincy police officer Thursday rushed to the scene of what a caller described as a “man down’’ at the corner of Beale Street and Newport Avenue only to discover that the slumped-over individual wasn’t a man at all. In fact, it wasn’t even a human being — it was a plush Batman doll leaning against a building.
Officers shared a picture of the large superhero doll, crumpled against a brick corner of a building, on Twitter.
“Passerby calls dispatch and reports a man down at the corner,’’ the department wrote. “Officer working detail in area runs to location to see if he can help . . . #batmandown.’’
They signed off the tweet with the hashtags #truestory, #seesomethingsaysomething, and #thejokerdidit.
Sergeant Karyn Barkas said the call came in from a concerned woman around 9:20 a.m. Thursday morning. Barkas said she doesn’t believe it was a prank phone call because the caller left both her name and her phone number.
Barkas said an officer working a detail nearby jumped into action, believing that the call could have been about a person who had possibly overdosed in the area.
“[He] ran over, and that’s what he found,’’ Barkas said.
According to dispatch audio archived by Broadcastify.com, an officer can be heard laughing and saying, “Batman’s just fine.’’
The department shared the image on social media to inject a bit of humor into the day. But Barkas said it’s important for people to reach out to police if they see something in the community, even if a situation a person believes to be serious ends up being nothing more than a caped crusader abandoned on the ground.
“We don’t ever want to discourage anyone from calling us,’’ Barkas said. “I truly believe that this person was concerned for someone’s safety, and luckily it turned out it was a just a stuffed animal. We just want to stress the point . . . let us come check it out.’’
