In a battle between Division 1 powerhouses, the host Brockton boys’ basketball team was able to rebound after blowing a 22-point lead to defeat No. 4 Newton North in overtime, 83-78, on Sunday.

The No. 20 Boxers were led by seniors Jonathan Duvivier (33 points), Bryan Henry (20 points), and Marquis Goncalves (16 points).

Henry came out firing, hitting three 3-pointers in the first quarter and giving Brockton an early 12-point lead.

Much of the same happened in the second quarter as Henry and Duvivier seemed unstoppable — combining for 30 points at the half as the Boxers’ lead was up to 16.

Newton North chipped the deficit to 13 going into the fourth quarter and then made its move. The Tigers went on a 19-6 run, and when sophomore Ethan Wright hit a 3-pointer with two minutes left, Newton North had a 68-67 lead.

“Our plan was not to panic,’’ Brockton coach Robert Boen said. “We wanted to try and keep running them like we had all game.’’

In the closing seconds, Brockton was down 3 with the ball. As time expired, Henry was fouled while attempting to tie the game. Henry sank all three free throws to send the game into overtime.

“I told the team, ‘It’s a whole new ball game now,’?’’ Boen said.

With less than a minute to go in overtime, Brockton (12-4) held a 3-point lead and was able to fend off one more late rally from Newton North (13-2) to finish the game.

After beginning the season 1-3, the Boxers have won 11 of 12, including big wins over Mansfield, Bridgewater-Raynham, and Newton North in the last week.

“We’ve been playing well and getting better and better,’’ Boen said. “To beat a team like [Newton North], that really gives you confidence moving forward.’’
