Two indicted for transporting drugs
Two men from Hampden County have been indicted on charges they transported drugs and cash between Texas and Massachusetts using secret compartments inside tractor trailers. Javier Gonzalez, 44, of Holyoke, and Jamil Roman, 38, of Chicopee, were indicted Thursday in US District Court in Springfield. Each was charged with distribution and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and related crimes. Prosecutors allege Gonzalez used tractor trailers associated with his company to drive to Texas to pick up heroin and cocaine. He returned to Massachusetts, where Roman sold the drugs. Prosecutors say Gonzalez modified the vehicles with compartments to conceal the drugs. Gonzalez was stopped in March 2014 in Agawam. A search turned up $1.17 million in a hidden compartment. (AP)

UConn closing satellite campus
The University of Connecticut is planning to close its satellite campus in Torrington in May as it deals with more than $31 million in proposed state budget cuts. The school announced Friday that it will present its closure plan to the Board of Trustees next Wednesday. The board will vote on the proposal in April. In a letter to the university community, provost Mun Choi said the recommendation is based on the combination of significantly reduced financial resources and Torrington’s declining enrollment. The branch has 88 full-time students. (AP)

Leftover snow money goes to roads
Scarce snow this winter has meant less plowing and use of sand and salt, leaving northern New England communities with extra money for road maintenance and other transportation projects. Maine officials say they’ll roll millions of dollars into the maintenance budget, for culverts, road repairs, and bridge repairs. New Hampshire transportation officials anticipate a savings of about $5 million, and hope to use half of that on municipal bridges. (AP)
